Loudon: More Weathermen For Obama

The Obama File 33 More Weathermen For Obama by Trevor Loudon, posted September 30, 2008, on his blog, The New Zeal, is cross-posted at RBO with the author’s permission. Loudon’s first Obama File was posted January 12, 2008. Trevor writes:

My last three posts have looked at Movement for a Democratic Society (MDS) and the organisation’s relationship to Barack Obama and his campaign.
Despite its innocuous sounding name, MDS (founded August 2006) is a coalition of former members of the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) its terrorist splinter the Weather Underground and three Marxist organisations, Communist Party USA (CPUSA), Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism (CCDS) and Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).
Every one of these strands has supported Barack Obama since at least the mid ’90s — some even further back.
Today many MDS activists are working in the Obama campaign, particularly through the MDS offshoot, Progressives for Obama (P4O).
Much as been written about the links between Barack Obama and his “patrons” former Weather Underground terrorists Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn.
I’ve shown that Dohrn has been an MDS board member, while her husband Ayers is at least an active supporter.
That’s two known former terrorists involved in MDS, but there are at least three more in the MDS/Progressives for Obama orbit — Jeff Jones, Howie Machtinger and Mark Rudd.
Ayers, Dorhn, Jones, Machtinger and Rudd are old revolutionary comrades. In the late ’60s the five were key leaders of the faction of SDS that split to form the Weather Underground. All attended the famous 1969 Flint War Council that effectively gave birth to the Weathermen faction of SDS.
All were virulently anti-American in their radical heyday.
Bernardine Dohrn has been accused of planting a bomb that killed San Francisco policeman Brian V. McDonnell. When police raided a Weathermen bomb factory in Pine Street San Francisco in 1970, they found the fingerprints of Ayers, Machtinger and Rudd.
All are still radicals today and all are proven Obama supporters.
This post profiles the three neglected Weathermen in the MDS/Progressives for Obama network-Jones, Machtinger and Rudd.
Who is Jeff Jones?

Jeff Jones went to his first rally against the Vietnam War in 1965. Within a year, he had quit Antioch College to become a fulltime organizer for Students for a Democratic Society.

In 1966 he traveled to Cambodia to meet with high-level leaders of the NLF. In 1967 and 1968 he served as SDS Regional Organizer for New York City. In 1969, he was elected, along with Bill Ayers and Mark Rudd, to SDS national office. Then, in the spring of 1970, he disappeared. As a leader of the Weather Underground, Jeff evaded an intense FBI manhunt for more than a decade. In 1981, they finally got him. Twenty special agents battered down the door of the Bronx apartment where he was living with his wife and four-year-old son.

Jeff Jones serves on the board of MDS. Jeff Jones is also a signed up supporter of Progressives for Obama.

Who is Howie Machtinger?

Today Howard Machtinger is director of Teaching Fellows at the University of North Carolina.

According to Frontpage Magazine

Machtinger was on the barricades at Columbia University in 1968 and was one of the founders of the Weather Underground. He co-authored a tome that stated, “At the right moment, revolutionaries within the United States were to wage a ‘people’s war’ and attack from within. The government would fall and ‘world Communism’ would eventually be instituted.” He also spoke about “how the black liberation movement is so far advanced at this point that the only thing left for white revolutionaries is to support blacks by fighting cops as a diversionary tactic.”

Machtinger is not a confirmed member of MDS, but does contribute to Next Left Notes, which is edited by MDS board member and Progressives for Obama endorser Tom Good.
Ayers, Dohrn and Rudd are also Next Left Notes contributors.

Machtinger has signed on as a supporter of progressives for Obama, on the same page incidentally as yet another former Weatherman, Steve Tappis. Further along Jennifer Dohrn—sister of Bernardine Dohrn–has also signed up.

Machtinger is also the author of a widely distributed essay entitled Obama and the Left:

If we, as a Left, are content to smugly and dismissively critique the Obama phenomenon, we trade self-fulfilling sectarianism for the chance at political impact. A victory for Obama will not only be a boon for the African-American community and for people of color, it will offer a unique opportunity for the development of an organized and aggressive Left movement that retains its independence at the same time that it is willing to risk everyday involvement in the strange world of American politics.
If we just critique, we will miss a moment that may not come again for a while. If our politics are meaningful, effective, and get to the root of problems, we should put them to the test in political work that connects to large numbers of people struggling to find direction in an increasingly dangerous world. Something wonderful is happening. We must be alive to it. I hope we can figure out how to relate to it effectively before we consign ourselves to continued marginalization.

Who is Mark Rudd?
Today Mark Rudd1 is a New Mexico school teacher.
From Mark Rudd’s website:

As he traveled the country, from the fall of 1968 to the summer of 1969, Mark met many other activists in SDS who were thinking along the same lines as he, that SDS could move from anti-war resistance to full-scale socialist revolution…

White students would reject their “white skin privilege” and actually begin armed struggle against the U.S. government; this, in turn, would attract broad youth support as the struggle increased, following the Cuban model. This theory became fully articulated in a paper presented to the SDS National Convention in Chicago in June, 1969, authored by a collective of eleven, of which Mark was a member. Its title was “You Don’t Need a Weatherman to Know Which Way the Wind Blows,” from which Mark’s faction of SDS became known as “The Weathermen.”
That convention proved to be SDS’ last. Following a titanic ideological battle concerning “the correct revolutionary direction,” a split occurred between the Weathermen and allies grouped around the National Office and a competing faction of Maoist Progressive Labor Party members and their allies. When it was all over, Mark found himself elected National Secretary of SDS, along with comrades Billy Ayers as Educational Secretary, and Jeff Jones as Inter-organizational Secretary, and the Weathermen in control of the National Office backed by a small number of chapters around the country…
A few national SDS leaders had met with Vietnamese and Cubans to find out about their resistance to U.S. imperialism. Out of these meetings came an invitation for SDS to send a group of students to Cuba in January, 1968. Because of his active work with the chapter, Mark was invited by the National Office to join the trip, which was openly defying the U.S. government’s ban on travel to Cuba. He accepted, working out a month-long absence with his professors…
Mark met young Cubans in positions of responsibility such as running schools and farms and medical institutions who were fired up with revolutionary enthusiasm: they were remaking society along non-capitalist lines, creating socialism! Meeting with Vietnamese delegates in Cuba, he learned about the nature of the resistance to American aggression, that these people believed they would inevitably drive the Americans from their country, no matter how long it took. As if to prove their point, the Tet Offensive was raging at the time in Vietnam, giving the lie to the American military’s claims that they were winning the war. His group was told by a Vietnamese diplomat in Havana, “The American people will eventually tire of the war and the troops will have to be withdrawn.”

According to the FBI Mark Rudd’s trip to Cuba also involved terrorist training in camps set up by Soviet KGB Colonel Vadim Kotchergine.

Today Mark Rudd serves on the board of MDS. Rudd is also an endorser of Progressives For Obama.

Clearly Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn are not the only former Weathermen backing the Senator from Illinois.
Add their old comrades Jeff Jones, Howie Machtinger, Mark Rudd and even Steve Tappis to the mix and you are starting to get beyond coincidence.

That former terrorists are working with Marxist groups to elect Barack Obama is beyond doubt.
Should US voters know this?

  1. This is SOOOOOOOOO scary. It’s like our country is committing suicide.

  2. Bill Ayers should not be teaching. He should be no where near impressionable youth. What the hell is wrong with that University?

  3. Type, it’s the university thing. AYERs would never be allowed to teach in public schools but some of these left cliff universities love guys like him.

  4. When he gets out, maybe Ted Kaczinsky can be a professor of environmental science

  5. Sickening UW. they spend their time ripping us apart. Sick.
Palen4, surprised we haven’t come across his name in conjunction with Barky.
The author asks if voters should know this – well when I try to give these articles out my Dem coworkers (suffer I do) do not believe it. They think we’re paranoid
weirdos making shit up. They are doing what my Mother told me happened in
Hitler’s Germany in the early days. People told her she was nuts.

  6. I saw a photo of SOROS at an early fundraiser for Obama. Soros owns Moveon and his son is on a major GOOGLE board. Google also owns youtube, so you can see how easy it is to explain things like when our blogs all got locked, and videos that disappear.

  7. Soros is also doing a major joint project with Google.

  8. I am so disappointed in Google. This spiders web was shocking, now I just think,
oh, another piece of shit. what happened with the blogs was very frightening.
Think how easy it will be for Obama to shut a lot of the blogs if he gets the WH

  9. Barry’s “radical train” is a mile long. Every nutjob from these idiots to hamas and Hugo Chaves love Barry and his obots continues to ignore it. UNBELIEVABLE!! I have never seen so many “red flags” involving a politician in my life.

  10. Do you know if Soros will be opening the Obama official national media network? Obama is going to keep his sloppy seconds, the current MSM
Won’t that day be a riot.

  11. I wonder if Joe Biden is watching this and if he knew all these things before now. Then I wonder if he’s watching MSNBC where “conservatives” like Tucker Carlson are trying to say that there isn’t much of a connection between the two. Like your connection to the truth, Tucker.

  12. Busy little bees aren’t they? I don’t get it…life is so short and these *&^*()$ have enough time to continue their handiwork.

  13. Tweets was just saying, oh, they sat in a meeting 10 yrs ago. I am grinding my teeth. I wrote to Hardball as always–useless.

  14. Thanks, Uppity. Great article. This information is terrifying, though, isn’t it? I knew there had to be someone out there somewhere who could get his hands on REAL information that supports everybody’s sneaking suspicion that evil is on the move.

I read an article today about Obama being a “CR” — that is, one of the wild, unexpected, long-lasting byproducts of the Culture Revolution of the 60s-70s. I’m from that era, as well, BUT, even then, as a young person, I thought this radical, domestic terrorism was STUPID! It’s so shallow, so intellectualized, and so cold-hearted until I suspect that is why Sarah Palin hits the scene in 2008 as a breath of fresh air, WHICH IS TEETOALLY CONFUSING to our cynical generation.

It’s been liberal government crap for 30 years, in my opinion, with morons in OUR legislature passing these incredibly absurd liberal laws that have forced smart men and women to succumb to idiotic practices in education, business, and society! And that is with the government knowing that Bill Ayers and his ilk were pushing this crap for MORE, MORE, MORE radical change. How could someone not have connected the dots long ago?

The cynical, snobby, urban-metro atmosphere of debate today honestly reeks from all this rubish! We are polarized by legislative acts that “force” common sense people to be fair, force us to love one another, force us to do the right thing WHEN WE ALREADY KNOW WHAT THE RIGHT THING IS AND HAVE ALREADY DONE IT! What I mean is, one’s personal compass on right and wrong should function as one responds to REALITY! But judgment has been deemed non-useful, and the effort of choice is no desirable — the government will decide what it is right FOR YOU, legislate it FOR YOU, then force you to OBEY.

Obama wants to increase this kind of social agenda. It’s radicalism leading to terrorism! My God, we are commercialized by the liberal media already telling us WHO WE ARE. No — You can’t be Sarah Palin. You have to a NEWSGIRL on CNN. It’s like a Clockwork Orange mentality coming full circle from these bean head, out-of-touch, radical activists straight into the U. S. Congress RIGHT NOW via fools like Nancy Pelosi. Nobody knows history. Nobody cares about history. Nobody feels anything but CONTEMPT for each other. And they call that GOOD.

Our own Congress has divided our nation by trying to solve problems CREATED by the smart Harvard/Columbia, Clockwork Orange grads with the Harvard/Columbia grad’s method — radicalism! How in the hell do you SOLVE problems with radicalism when radicalism is a PROBLEM? Having Harvard tell “small-town” Americans what to do is exactly back-asswards! There are millions of us small-towners out here who are not bitter American HICKS. We think these people are positively lunatic.

Listening to the beltway news divas, who are so immature that their best idea of news is how low their neckline should drop, and who drone on and on and on like papermache marionettes, one would be hard pressed to actually SEE THE REAL FACE OF RADICAL TERRORISM — unless they are IT! The news networks have lost their minds, and it’s surreal to watch this as a bystander. Our culture is crazy, Uppity. To love Obama and dismiss Ayers proves it!

Our news people are children of the 80s, our journalists: children of the 80s. What do they know of horror? No cell phone!!! How easily are they led around with a messianic nosering! Oh, GOD, they just want to lead by force with intimidation, control the masses, and BRAG~!~ Sounds just like Bill Ayers to me ….. without his bombs!@! Obama has overcome with mere speech what Ayers tried to do with ammunition!

In other words, quantity over quality, shallow over deep — as long as your Great Leader has got a Harvard degree, he doesn’t need a staff to keep you in line! Shit — even The One fell for that theory and went and got hisself a couple of Columbia/Harvard degrees! And our culture has fallen for it, too. How quickly generations move away from horror only to have their children be influenced by a love for horror! THEY THINK Obama is a messager of change, that he’s interested in the complexities of THEIR needs.
Obama is not actually discussing our welfare; he’s discussing welfare, which is different. And aggression, and force, and anger. Always stirring the evil stew. He’s always hiding in the dark, standing aside like the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz — and our children are becoming his little monkeys flying around to do his dirty work!

I hope Sarah throws water on him, and he melts! Then we can all GO BACK TO KANSAS, where they’re saying this election is going to be WON!

  15. UW I think you put the wrong photo at the head of the story if you know what I mean.
    http://deadenders.files.wordpress.com/2008/10/ayers-weather20underground20pic31.jpg

  16. No I couldn’t do that, Deadenders. This was a cross post of someone else’s story. I didn’t write a word of it. And it’s pretty serious stuff.

  17. Thanks for the post. I remember Mark Rudd from my childhood/youth. Recall the face.

Also recall the fellow ahead of me in high school who went on to date a pretty radical gal. She wanted to go to Cuba to cut sugar cane in Cuba for Fidel (part of the Radical movement). Guess she wanted to get an “education”, too. It was the hip, cool and fashionable thing to do. She may have gone, but he didn’t (thank Heavens!).

Like others, I thought it got to be a bit much back then, too. Now it’s really scary.

  18. Re: Ayers – Anyone remember the book, “Teaching As A Subversive Activity”? Sound like Billy Ayer took that to mean something more in his education work.

  19. Greetings from Chicago, Ms. UW! I’ve been traveling for a bit and haven’t been checking many blogs of late. Tonight was the first time for yours in weeks.

I fear that the MSM has sealed the fate and you’re going to have Obamanation for the next 4 years. I also predict that most Americans who voted for Obama will have buyers remorse after just 6 months.

Don’t stop fighting the good fight though. Maybe something will happen this month to turn things around for McCain & Palin. But I have not yet been able to think up an effective antidote to the O’Kool-Aid that has consumed so many in your nation.

Back home in Canada things are looking much brighter. It looks like our Conservative Party is headed to majority status on October 14th, though that is not certain yet either.

    Interesting times we live in.

P.S. Notice that the $700 Billion had no effect on the markets!!

  20. P4P, I wonder why Josh Shapiro and Ed Rendell and Judge Midge and DA Abraham, all stand for this…? Really?
We know why Patrick Murphy does…yechh , and Casey, too.

We know where Mayor Michael Nutter stands, I mean like here in the historical heart of PA.

It is just all out of this World…i’m stumped.

    I think. (?)

  21. Sarahcuda will never stand for a bunch of commie radicals takin’ over her good ole’ U.S. of A.

I never thought in my life I would ever appreciate someone like her SO much. Seriously, I really sold this country short and I apologize. There’s something to be said for people like her and McCain who are so fervently patriotic. THANK GOD!!!! All the degrees in the world won’t save us from this mess. It’s gonna take the Freakin redneck Cavalry(McPalin) at this point. After they get us out of this disaster, I will kiss their cowboy boots and even listen to country music, I swear….

  22. deadenders,

    LMAO!!!!!!

  23. Geez. Aging Baby Boomers who are now backing the ? youthsquads
you know, I am really made incredibly angry by this deal Uppity.

Very. Great article, Uppity. It is so not the 60’s anymore.

Remember that piece you did on them ages ago—the McGovern piece? Well, their concept of radical is nothing more than a sellout and an empty logo at that. He’s nothing.

  24. It just gets deeper and darker and makes me sicker and angrier. It really makes you wonder how so many of these people have assimilated into our society.

And we were worried about Muslim Sleeper Cells…
