“Senator Obama has vowed that as president he would triple the number of AmeriCorps volunteers, double the number of Peace Corps volunteers, and create a Classroom Corps, a Health Corps, a Clean Energy Corps, and other new programs,” Suzanne Perry wrote April 17, 2008, at Philanthropy.com.

But the story begins in 1992, when Barack Obama graduated from Harvard Law School. This was the same year he led ProjectVote! in conjunction with ACORN. This was the same year he served on the founding board of nonprofit Public Allies, an organization dedicated to training a cadre of “community organizers”.

Gretchen Reynolds wrote in the January 1993 issue of Chicago Magazine:

The number of new voter registrations before the [November 1992] election hit an all-time high. And the majority of those new voters were black. More than 150,000 new African-American voters were added to the city’s rolls. In fact, for the first time in Chicago’s history–including the heyday of Harold Washington–voter registrations in the 19 predominantly black wards outnumbered those in the city’s 19 predominantly white ethnic wards, 676,000 to 526,000. [...]

None of this, of course, was accidental. The most effective minority voter registration drive in memory was the result of careful handiwork by Project Vote!, the local chapter of a not-for-profit national organization. [...]

At the head of this effort was a little-known 31-year-old African-American lawyer, community organizer, and writer: Barack Obama.

Reynolds writes that, in 1982,

Sandy Newman, a lawyer and civil-rights activist, had founded Project Vote! the year before to promote registration among low-income and minority voters. At the time, his operation was still centered in the nation’s capital, pioneering such now-commonplace practices as registering people at food-stamp and welfare offices.

Note in the following March 21, 2008, YouTube video from the Obama campaign on Obama and Project Vote! Obama says that Sandy Newman was “a friend of mine”:

Reynolds writes that Carol Moseley Braun’s 1992 “upset primary victory over Alan Dixon … altered Newman’s feelings” about opening a Project Vote! office in Cook County “and went looking for someone to head it.” Obama “agreed to put his other [community organizing work with church and community leaders on Chicago's West Side] aside.”

[Obama] helped train 700 deputy registrars, out of a total of 11,000 citywide. And he began a saturation media campaign with the help of black-owned Brainstorm Communications. (The company’s president, Terri Gardner, is the sister of Gary Gardner, president of Soft Sheen Products, Inc., which donated thousands of dollars to Project Votes efforts.) The group’s slogan–”It’s a Power Thing”–was ubiquitous in African-American neighborhoods. Posters were put up. Black-oriented radio stations aired the group’s ads and announced where people could go to register. Minority owners of McDonald’s restaurants allowed registrars on site and donated paid radio time to Project Vote! Labor unions provided funding, as, in late fall, did the Clinton/Gore campaign, whose national voter-registration drive was being directed by Chicago alderman Bobby Rush.

Bruce Dixon, the Atlanta-based managing editor at Black Agenda Report, wrote April 11, 2007:

Project VOTE engineers large scale registration drives in locations where a surge in the black vote can alter the results of an nationally significant election. In 1992, Illinois was the target, and Project VOTE named Barack Obama its Illinois director. This reporter was one of three field organizers who worked under Obama in the summer of 1992.

Using to full advantage black Chicago’s decades-long tradition of civic mobilization we reached out to dozens of community groups from sororities and churches, to unions and motorcycle clubs, and put 120,000 voters on the rolls that summer, mostly blacks, Latinos and gays. … We raised and distributed funds, trained volunteers to work festivals, street corners, churches, workplaces, to distribute and collect registration forms, to photocopy them before turning the forms in. We showed them how to [work] the phones recontacting new voters, arranged to offer them absentee ballots and chased them to the polls election day, enabling the victory that year of Carol Moseley Braun, the first and only black woman ever to sit in the US Senate.

By January 1993, Reynolds writes, Project Vote! operations in Chicago had “officially closed down.” When asked whether he planned to run for political office, Obama responded “My sincere answer is, I’ll run if I feel I can accomplish more that way than agitating from the outside.”

Remember Obama’s use of the Alinskyesque words “agitating from the outside.”

Project Vote! and ACORN

Let’s be perfectly clear. As Discover the Networks reports Project Vote! is a front group for the radical cult ACORN — “Spearheads the Voting Rights Movement”:

Project Vote is the voter-mobilization arm of ACORN. It is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose professed purpose is to carry out “non-partisan” voter registration drives; to counsel voters on their rights; and to litigate on behalf of voting rights — focusing on the rights of the poor and the “disenfranchised.”

When we talk about the one — Project Vote! — we are talking about one-in-the-same — ACORN.
