Pass the popcorn.
Roland Burris is a good man and a fine public servant, but the Senate Democrats made it clear weeks ago that they cannot accept an appointment made by a governor who is accused of selling this very Senate seat,” he said. “I agree with their decision, and it is extremely disappointing that Governor Blagojevich has chosen to ignore it.”
There are tons of questions here.
For starters, if Barack Obama respects Roland Burris this much, why would he agree that he can’t be his replacement? Now I know Barack Obama endorsed Burris when he gave Blagojevich a primary. And I know that Bobby Rush beat the pants off of Obama when he ran for office the first time. But hey, bygones are bygones, right? Right? Who cares who appoints the guy so long as it’s legal.
Blagojevich isn’t the one who is getting screwed here by fighting this. Burris is the one getting screwed. And Roland Burris sure has a lot more qualifications on paper than, say, Caroline Kennedy. My cat has more creds than she has. Yet, I don’t see anybody objecting to her bid for an appointment. Of course, Burris “disobeyed” the party by accepting this appointment, so I don’t imagine ole Roland has gotten any congratulatory phone calls—-although I sure he got phone calls…
Then there’s Harry Reid. He’s looking a little foolish here. I wasn’t aware the the Senate has to approve an appointment to a vacant Senate seat, except in the case of competence of the appointee. The senate does have the right to question an appointee on the appointee’s merits though. But if the problem isn’t with Burris, like everyone is saying, then you can see where this is going.
Since when does the Senate pick or have to approve anySenator? New senators show up in their rarefied air space in one of two ways: Via an election or via a Governor appointment. We are talking about a State right here not a Harry Reid right.
The thing is, the Senate screwed the pooch by not passing a special election bill when they had the chance. They didn’t want to do that because they were afraid a Republican might win. So they lost the only control they could have had over this situation. I guess they didn’t think they could conjure up enough dead people and cartoon characters to vote for their candidate in such a short window of time.
Then there’s the Secretary of State saying he won’t sign off on Blago’s appointment of anyone to Barack Obama’s open Senate seat. Does the Secretary of State even come into play here? Does a Governor need a Secretary of State to approve his appointment?
Does it matter of Barack Obama approves of his replacement? Let’s face it, until Blagojevich leaves his office, he’s the Governor. A fitting situation for Illinois politics. They all deserve to be naked before America for the filthy way they run their state.
There’s another big question: How will Bobby Rush, Roland Burris and the African American community take Barack Obama’s statement???
“I believe the best resolution would be for the Governor to resign his office and allow a lawful and appropriate process of succession to take place. While Governor Blagojevich is entitled to his day in court, the people of Illinois are entitled to a functioning government and major decisions free of taint and controversy,” he said.
Which lawful process, Barack? Senators get seated one of two ways. And election or a Governor appointment. Blago is still Governor. Nobody can UnGovernor him unless he leaves or is impeached. Neither of those two things has happened. So, isn’t this process lawful? As for “taint and controversy,” when did this start to be a problem in Illinois politics? It’s not like “taint and controversy” is rare there. Just saying.
And finally, do you get the distinct feeling that Harry and Barack have decided who they want to be Barack’s replacement—and are steamrolling Illinois’ state rights?
Anybody seen Jesse Junior? Why do I get the feeling he’s in this someplace?
I think that this appointment can’t be stopped in any legal way. None of this is technically the Senate or Barack Obama’s business. That means it’s time for some strong-arming, threats, bribes, blackmail and good ole Chicago coercion.
This is a mess. That’s why I know Blagojevich is having a good day. Hemay be a thieving turkey, but he’s a clever theiving turkey. I bet Harry still has the dry heaves from yesterday. The Other Useless Party must be enjoying this a lot.
Oh and one more thing: Anybody heard from Mayor Daley? I know. He’s just a Mayor. And the knife ran away with the spoon.
So gang, how do you think this will play out? Remember, now, it’s Illinois, so don’t let things like the constitution or law or The Right Thing figure into your analysis. Anything goes.

"This is not culture. This is not custom. This is criminal."

LOL, I have no idea how this is going to play out. It’s fascinating.
What’s kind of pitiful is that the Dem party has lost my respect so badly, that I’m actually LMAO when the crooks back them into a corner and force them to face their hypocrisy. I don’t want to cheer for Blago, but I can’t help myself. In a way he’s the most honest of them all. A little too honest, you’re supposed to conceal that crap and pretend you’re a pillar of virtue. When it comes to Chicago politics, this is a case of let he who is without sin cast the first stone. Blago is not going to cooperate and go quietly into the night while everyone else acts all self rightious over corruption.
You summed it up perfectly: “Remember, now, it’s Illinois, so don’t let things like the constitution or law or The Right Thing figure into your analysis. Anything goes.” Except for one thing: It’s not just Illinois any longer, it’s the entire USA and US government. Illinois corruption and thugocracy has gone mainstream and sits at the wheel of the ship of state.
The media plays along. The worthless nitwits of pseudo-journalism worked so hard to get their messiah elected president, that they’re not about to turn on him now. Particularly not on the mere technicality of the US Constitution or the principle of the rule of law. Screw that. This is The One, Dear Leader, Lord Barry. He may be Prince of Thieves but he’s also the narcissist-elect, soon to be narcissist-in-chief.
What is the usual reaction by the Odumbo camp when they do not get their outcome, but to slander and attempt to discredit the ones who get in their way!
When that tactic fails which has become the norm over the past few weeks, then their next move is to make the opponent a member of Obama’s cabinet, exibited many times so far, perfect example is Hillary being appointed SOS.
How so you may be wondering, some say to eliminate her from political life, some say to open the doors for Caroline (I have nothing to offer) Kennedy and so on.
The real truth of the matter is the words spoken while in Africa to an ABC reporter by Bill Clinton saying: I will speak of the elections after January 20th, 2009!
Everyone knows when Bill speaks, people listen and everyone knows the Clintons have all the goods on Obama, Axelrod and the other Chicago creeps, and everyone knows Bill speaks his mind and is convincing when he does.
The fact that Burris is not a lightweight that Odumbo can push around scares the crap out of him and his being selected by Bloga scares Odumbo even more since Blago has the ear of a US Senator who can cause problems for the useless empty suited Selected POTUS!
Odumbo also doesn’t like the message Blago sent to the Gov of NY to fill the seat with a strong person able to repell the Odbumo crap of control he is convinced he has over the operations of the DNP and all its officals! Thus do not select Caroline ( I deserve it because of my name) Kennedy!
“Then there’s Harry Reid. He’s looking a little foolish here. I wasn’t aware the the Senate has to approve an appointment to a vacant Senate seat, except in the case of competence of the appointee. The senate does have the right to question an appointee on the appointee’s merits though. But if the problem isn’t with Burris, like everyone is saying, then you can see where this is going”
*************
IIRC, the Senate can, by a majority vote, prevent seating a Senator…but only for the criteria in Art. I sec. 2 of the Constitution…(age, residence, etc). Any other reason is subject to judicial review which the Dems would loose. POWELL v. MCCORMICK
The best “show” would be to try and expel Burris from the Senate. The Dems voting to get rid of the only AA in the Senate would be something to see. Expulsion requires a 2/3 vote and can’t be challenged in court.
Slapstick comedy at its best… I just hope no one ends up getting hurt as in committing suicide. Heart attacks and unexplainable accidents get the job done, too. This is a tough bunch who play to win.
All that being said, I’ve come to love Blago. I would miss him terribly.
UW: Does the Secretary of State even come into play here?
My question would be: Do any of the newbies know what their jobs are? Besides hope and change, that is. Rahm as an Enforcer (unless he has a stiletto up his sleeve) is hard to picture. Ditto PEBO. And now that they will soon be working for the big US, their interest in Illinois should be over with. Can’t go home anymore, guys.
So… we’re left with Lincoln Land sorting it out for themselves. Right now Blago is in charge and he wants Burris. I say leave it alone. Burris is as good as any, and darn sight better than a lot of other appointees up for favors.
To Blago I say keep stirring that cauldron — this is the most fun we’ve had since Alice dropped into wonderland.
I can’t thank the Lord enough for this one. This is a gift that will keep giving to many.
Let’s see, there is the race card, the mob mentality, the bring it on baby attitude…
I anticipate overtime on this baby so I have purposely gone out and purchased two cartons of popcorn.
BTW, to all a very Happy New Year! Wherever you are, stay warm and safe because “you know, uhm, duh” there will be more to come in the following days.
Happy New Year everybody!
LOL, I do hope Blago becomes the gift that just keeps on giving. Ironic, he fills me with more “hope” for 2009, than Mr. Changey does.
SHV, not only that but guys like Strom remained in the senate long after they were actually dead and propped up by colleagues, so they surely can’t site age 71 as a reason. Let’s face it, they have no reason to stop Burris. They can’t blame Burris for Blagojevich either. This calls for Other Means. The Chicago Way.
Well all of this will certainly keep Uppity in material for some time to come.
Bahaha. Obama is disappointed with the Burris choice. He should come see how many of us are disappointed with the Obama choice.
“…the people [of Illinois] are entitled to a functioning government and major decisions free of taint and controversy,” he said….”
Does this imply that the people of our country are also entitled to a functioning government and major decisions free of taint and controversy?
So, how is it that the decision to hand O the Democratic nomination is free of taint and controversy?
So very many questions! :~o
SHV
You forget the comedic aspect of bringing up the clauses of Article II of the Constitution. Perhaps that would be a good (and humorous) thing. Let’s have the entire friggin’ US government show their Constitutional eligibility for their posts! (I’d bet more than just teh won would fail the test…)
Truth be known, there is at least 1 Constitutional scholar that says Hillary Clinton (or any sitting member of Congress) is ineligible to serve as Sec. of State (even with the pay cut). Leo Donofrio doesn’t think John McCain is eligible. And the SCOTUS still has 2 conferences scheduled on Phillip Berg’s lawsuit.
Anything can happen, and at this stage only the Almighty knows what will…
Happy New Year to all! 8)
yttik,
Classic! ROFL!
Over here, bus driver!
As yttik said, I’m actually starting to have some…dare I say it? Hope!! hahaha! Happy New Year to all Uppitycrats, Uppityicans, Uppitypendants or whatever we are!
Personally, I find it rich that a man who owes his nomination to becoming his party’s Presidential nominee to a rigged roll call vote process is registering any objection to how anybody gets themselves a political position.
O/T: Many congratulations to you, Uppity, on your becoming a finalist for best individual blogger. Well done.
Thank you Heidi. And I am so glad to have you here! Your razor sharp assessments have always inspired me.
SHV,
Ironically, Harry could have refused to seat BARACK OBAMA for that seat in 2004 since there is still no proof that he’s been a citizen at all.
I’m glad I’m not the only one that is cheering Blago on! I know he’s a crook, but man does he have a set of brass ones or what? This is truly entertaining and I do hope it drags on, we deserve some fun.
Let’s come up with a completely bizarre twist to all of this. JJ being pushed for the seat is too obvious and not nearly as much fun as some of the other possibilities. Mayor Daley perhaps, but he might not want to give up his little fiefdom. There is always Uncle Emil, he did after all not only make himself a US Senator, but a President….he deserves something don’t you think?
Oh now I have it. The Illinois legislature moves to impeach Blago, the lieutenant Governor moves up and rescinds Burris’ appointment. Then a little tribal warfare ensues similar to what’s already taken place, except not wire tapped. Then in a grand gesture PEBO suggests Meeeeeechelle!! That way she can make her own history, plus we all know she’s not happy about losing her salary. Granted a Senate salary would be a pay cut….but with hubby in the White House the kick back possibilities are endless. Now that would be an entire case of popcorn! OK so that’s not likely to happen, but hey after everything I’ve seen this year anything is possible.
Congrats on your award Uppity!
Um, there is a third way to be appointed=The predecessor dies in a very suspicious plane crash,
ala Mel Carnahan and Paul Welstone and even
John Heinz, whose wife Teresa is now married to another John named POS Kerry (excuse me).
John Heinz was a PA Republican senator who famously didn’t get along with HRBush, served on several Senate committees, including Finance and Banking. He wrote a critical article “Foreign Takeover of U.S. Banking — a Real Danger?” (Maybe fatal-to him.) His plane had “landing gear trouble” and a helicopter inspecting it in midair got too close, clipped the plane and both crashed.
Both Wellstone’s and Carnahan’s were Democrats. Their suspicios crashes in the closing days of their campaigns had less credible explanations,
but Cheney famously threatened Wellstone that he’d better drop his antiwar stance “or we’ll get even with you.” WE?
Take Jean Carnahan (please)….what worthwhile thing did she do in office? And then there’s Claire McCaskill…ow ow Uppity!! Quit hitting! Get her off me DE?! I didn’t swear, or did I? After all, dear old Claire was rated by none other than the NYTimes as Prrresidential material. (Coff caff) Yep, she deserves if as much as Caroline deserves Hillary’s seat.
(Better quit now–Uppity gets mad about the ‘C’ names…Caroline, Claire…ouch! Do you have to throw tomatoes? Don’t waste, make pasta sauce.)
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!
“And finally, do you get the distinct feeling that Harry and Barack have decided who they want to be Barack’s replacement—and are steamrolling Illinois’ state rights?”
BINGO!
There ya go. That is the reason.
Tho I think it may be Caroline…. not JJJ.
In eaither case, it’s preordained. Just as Obama was.
Could someone get in touch with obama ..and tell him that he is disappointing to us..he might leave.
this is like a whole bunch of Shakespeare plays rolled up into one. you’re the expert UW.
when do the daggers come out?
happy new year all.
lets all feed the kitty..
happy new year all.
kitty is hungry..
Challenge, can anyone prove this wrong?:–
1. Constitution Article II requires USA President to be “natural born citizen”.
2. BHO’s website admits his dad was Kenyan/British, not American, citizen when BHO was born.
3. BHO is therefore not a “natural born citizen” (irrespective of Hawaiian birth or whether he may be a 14th Amendment “citizen” of USA) — as confirmed in the Senate’s own McCain qualification resolution agreed to by BHO.
4. Supreme Court has already docketed two upcoming conferences, 1/9/09 and 1/16/09 — between dates Congress counts electoral votes (1/8/09) and Presidential inauguration (1/20/09) — to address Berg Case and fashion relief on BHO’s eligibility to be President.
5. Since no facts are in dispute, Supreme Court rules on Summary Judgment to enjoin BHO’s inauguration as President.
6. Therefore, BHO is not inaugurated as President.
7. Vice President Elect Biden is inaugurated Acting President under the 20th Amendment to serve until new President is determined — the procedure for which determination to be set out by Congress and/or the Supreme Court so long as in conformance with the Constitution.
As a kindness to UW’s readers, the Mad Typist is cutting and pasting hercomments posted at deadenders, to which I got some very astute feedback from our esteemed regulars.
barfo endorsed Burris in an election, but is now throwing Burris and the entire black community under the barfomobile because right now he needs the dems in Congress more than he needs the AA community.
And when he needs the blacks again and snaps his fingers, he may be in for a great big surprise. By then they’ll have realized that he’s not paying their mortgages or putting gas into their cars.
My guess: he’ll fix it with Reid so JJJr. gets the seat.
i LOVE blago!
the man is a patriot, and my personal hero.
he’s got eveyone on t.v. saying ‘taint,’ and he’s a very public reminder to all that barack obama is the product of the most corrupt political machine in this country.
what’s not to love?
(not to worry, uppity, i will always love you best!)
