The first swine flu death is confirmed. A 23 month old child in Texas has died. As of this moment, the identity of the child has not been revealed but it is confirmed that the child was recently in Mexico. I don’t know if that means the child came over the border from Mexico, or if it means the child traveled to Mexico recently. There is a lot of blogger speculation out there, but no actual factual information. I’ll update as more is revealed.

Update: FOX is reporting the child was from Mexico and was transported while ill to Texas for treatment.

Local FOX news just reported the child was FROM Mexico, and was living in Brownsville (Border City), transferred to Houston to a hospital there and passed away.
Make you wonder that when CDC put out warning that there “Will be Deaths in the US” if they were aware of this case (and perhaps others) already….
the cdc says to expect more deaths. I’m just concerned that there may be a rush to our border of sick people.

I am hearing from some to get the flu vaccine and from others not to get it since there is no real vaccine for this form of swine flu.
I am afraid. The father at my Catholic church just lost his mother suddenly in Mexico over the Easter holiday.
He of course went to Mexico to attend her funeral.
He just got back for services this Sunday. I am afraid to go to church, afraid to send my son to school.
We live in southern Utah and we have a large Hispanic community (I am Hispanic) and some regularly go to Mexico to see their families it’s only natural.
We are currently testing at least 5 people here in Utah.
They said we will get the flu here, and to expect deaths, but shouldn’t we all be doing all we can to contain this virus?
Shouldn’t we all just stay in our homes and not go out unless necessary to contain this virus?
I think our country is being a little to lax when it comes to a pandemic. The entire world is now being infected with this virus!
This is big! This is biological warfare at it’s ugliest.
We need to stop the spread of this virus, and by staying home and protecting ourselves we can at least be doing all we can.
I fear for our country and the safety of all who live here.

A little levity?
I had a self induced case of swine flu yesterday….can’t believe I ate the whole thing, oink, oink! I was sick all afternoon!
People are starting to get a little paranoid about this flu thing. I went to the grocery store last night and needed laundry detergent. As usual when I started down that aisle I also started sneezing, always do. There were two people already on the aisle and they both looked at me with complete fear and beat feet, LOL!
I think next time I’ll try sneezing at the check out counter!

In all seriousness the advice about frequent hand washing and avoiding crowds is very sound advice. It’s common sense to avoid obviously sick people. Everybody pick up some purell and lysol wipes and USE THEM. Wipe down your buggy at the store, use the wipes when opening doors. Think about things other people touch…like your mailbox. Your mailman goes all over so open your mailbox with a lysol wipe and get the kind that work against flu. Same goes for gas pumps….lots of things, just stop and think about it and use precautions.
I have a little experience with avoiding germs. My child had no immune system for two plus years thanks to leukemia and subsequent treatment. Her immune system just returned to normal last month. I intend to simply continue my germaphobe ways for a while….we’ve been through too much no flu is coming into my house! BTW we were very successful at avoiding illness during treatment.
This thing is already spinning out of control. People are buying those masks–then taking them off to eat–aren’t they supposedly covered with captured cirus–then do they wash their hands? Whateever. This family in Mexico has lost a child–now they will be demonized. I have written on quarantining many times–to make it stick, if they go this route, they have to be prepared to shoot people who try to leave…etc. Do you see this happening? Junior is already asking for billions…
I was just reading a story on yahoo about masks not being all that effective. I can’t seem to find the link now.
I find this alarming because my 2 year old recently had pneumonia and all the doctors and nurses wore masks when they entered the room when I had him in the ER.
Hmmm… I see medical professionals wearing them to prevent the spread of infection but we are told (I am paraphrasing) they don’t really stop the virus from spreading and that they may give you a false sense of security therefore they aren’t all that effective.
I don’t like it. Not one bit.

1) Tamaflu or any other vaccine is not effective against swine flu, so don’t waste your time, money on it. Not only that, but if you recall, there were horrible side effects
2) the atomic structure of the virus so small that most masks offer no protection
3) there are effectively no preventive measures to take.

I heard that wearing masks in public is useles because people are probably exposed before the mask goes on.. In a hospital, it is more isolated.

Tamniflu is an antiviral than can shorten the course, but not knock this down (or any flu). There is no vaccine for this–the one developed under Carter had bad side efx and now has been destroyed. Even people with this strain may not even need or benefit from Tamiflu. So there we are…wherever that is.
Sorry but this is just what we who are in favor of no amnesty to illegals and closing the borders have said would happen. I think America had better reconsider their position of closing borders and upholding the immigration laws that are in the US Constitution.

Star I think you are referring to the last outbreak on a military base during the Ford administration & it was his folks that tried to contain the outbreak with a hastily developed and administered Vaccine that led to unfortunate and unanticipated side effects.

Re: Borders. Really, who are we kidding. Both party leaders want that border open. So the LEAST they can do is set up a clinic to check for communicable diseases before they close their eyes and let them cross. Seriously. This could become very deadly. This has just started and we all know it.
