While our president was gargling and getting ready to read his teleprompter, WHO raised the level of the Swine Flu situation to 5. Considering there are only six levels, this is not great news.
The World Health Organization raised its pandemic alert for swine flu to the second highest level Wednesday, meaning that it believes a global outbreak of the disease is imminent.
WHO Director General Margaret Chan declared the phase 5 alert after consulting with flu experts from around the world. The decision could lead the global body to recommend additional measures to combat the outbreak, including for vaccine manufacturers to switch production from seasonal flu vaccines to a pandemic vaccine.
“All countries should immediately now activate their pandemic preparedness plans,” Chan told reporters in Geneva. “It really is all of humanity that is under threat in a pandemic.”
In the meantime, the border areas between Mexico and the USA remain open to anyone who can hop over. Considering that the epidemic started in Mexico, it’s not hard to guess which direction the traffic is going. The CDC believes that closing the borders is not necessary. Using some convoluted reasoning, our government has also decided that thermal scanners are not going to be used on incoming travelers at the border or anywhere else, because those scanners only flag people who have a fever and some people could still have the flu without a fever. I’ll leave the analysis of that reasoning to you, although it would be nice if they just admitted that we don’t have any thermal scanners available to customs officers.
In an effort to flag potential carriers of the swine flu, some Asian countries reportedly are using scanners that automatically measure the body temperatures of people crossing the border and arriving at airports.
But automatic thermal scanning is not available to U.S. customs officers, who have to rely on their intuition when they think someone who is ill is entering the country.
Wow. We pick out people with Swine Flu using our senses. Cool. That’s technology for you!
“Right now we’re just watching the symptoms and making sure that we’re being vigilant on people that are really displaying any kinds of symptoms that would have to do with any flu or cold,” said Lloyd Easterling, spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
He told FOXNews.com U.S. customs officials do not have or use thermal scanners, but that such technology is probably not needed.
“While that may be something that’s being discussed for (the future), I don’t know that it’s necessarily required right now,” he said.
Instead, officers are conducting what’s known as “passive screening.” They have the daunting task of watching out for common symptoms that could reflect an everyday cold, or the swine flu that has countries around the world on alert.
They are going to discuss thermal scanners in the future. All righty then.
Cases have cropped up in ten states.
Dr. Richard Besser, the acting chief of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said in Atlanta there were confirmed cases in ten states, with 51 in New York, 16 in Texas and 14 in California. Two cases have been confirmed in Kansas, Massachusetts and Michigan, while single cases have been reported in Arizona, Indiana, Nevada and Ohio.
State officials in Maine said laboratory tests had confirmed three cases in that state, although those had not yet been included in the CDC count.
The good news is they have managed to give the swine flu a more scientific name. It is hereby now named the H1N1 virus. This should come as no surprise after Acts of Terrorism have been renamed “Human-Caused Disasters”. And Kathleen Sebelius was confirmed, so she’s going to fix everything. Yesterday our government said that not having a head of HHS wasn’t a problem. Not having a Surgeon General wasn’t a problem. S o, I was just wondering…..why do we have them at all?
But whatever you do, don’t panic. You can get yourself some RELENZA. It’s manufacturer claims it helps prevent you from catching the Flu.
See?
RELENZA (ruh-LENS-uh) is a medicine that can both treat influenza (flu, infection caused by influenza virus) and help to prevent getting the flu.
Side effects are:
In studies, the most common side effects with RELENZA have been headaches; diarrhea; nausea; vomiting; nasal irritation; bronchitis; cough; sinusitis; ear, nose, and throat infections; and dizziness. Other side effects that have been reported, but were not as common, include rashes and allergic reactions, some of which were severe.
So basically, if you want to avoid the Flu, you have to take a product that gives you the Flu. Seems fair.

Thermal sensors aren’t the only technology we need to ’stock up’ on (sorry for the bad pun). Replikins, Ltd (a biotech co.) looks to have predicted the outbreak a year ago: http://bullmoosegal.blogspot.com/2009/04/pass-bacon.html
Bullmoose, sister…….you have got to go into your blog settings and ease up on what it takes to post a comment on your blog. When I see that page from WP telling me that Blogger wants my information, Yes or No, you can bet it’s gonna be no. I have tried to post on your blog several times and the requirements make me opt out. kkkkkkk???
I read that Barry said that closing the border between US and Mexico would be like “closing the barn door after the horse has run out.” Meaning people have already come into this country with the virus. Uhh….true but….wouldn’t it be easier to contain if we stopped letting people in with the virus???
He’s getting HUGE pressure to close the border. HUGE.
All he needs to do is tell them it’s temporary till we contain the virus. Then after that, they can go right back to illegally coming here. lol.
Imust – the tortured logic of that statement has me seeing “Lost Vote” hovering over Zer0’s head
Biden was his usual dumb a88 self on the today show. Said people crossing in open air spaces at the borders are not the problem, it’s confined spaces people should avoid. Like all these people crossing the border are just gonna wander around the country…outside of confined spaces.
Swell, Joe was probably drunk.
Swell – “Like all these people crossing the border are just gonna wander around the country…outside of confined spaces.”
that IS what they do!
Ask all those land-owners on the borders in south Texas and Arizona…..
No way, Freedom. You mean they just cross the river and roam around, like the migration of the wildebeast, or something?
“closing the barn door after the horse has run out.”
What about all the horses that are still running in?
Close the damn border!
Now!
There goes the administrations high speed rail program.
Why no concern for the 36,000 Americans that die each year from run of the mill flu.
Today the headline was that they closed a school in Phoenix–the kid had already gotten better. I notice fewer headlines today. As for the scanners–I don’t want rent-a-cops secretly seeing how hot my body is.
This whole pandemic thing is laughable… 109 out of 300,000,000. OMG – run for the hills…. LOL
IMP sais – Barry said that closing the border between US and Mexico would be like “closing the barn door after the horse has run out.”
That’s because if he says to close the borders, the neighbor will get mad and exact retribution. Better to get a pandemic, than get a whole big country mad at the Zer0 messiah.
We wouldn’t want to offend the Mexicans now would we. Our border agents aren’t even allowed to wear masks.
Bullmoose, sister … Um – trying to figure that one out. I’ll let you know (still fairly new to this blogging business).
UW,
Not only does Relenza have horrible side effects, but the Tamiflu everyone is taking and clamoring for is clinically proven to cause delusions and hallucinations:
http://www.yourlawyer.com/artic
Great, now we’ll have millions hallucinating zombies marching into FEMA camps….
Wait….that might be a good thing?
Isn’t it profiling if you are looking for specific characteristics and pulling people out of line that you suspect? Allergy sufferers will be needlessly profiled!
Corrected link on Tamiflu:

another good crisis ..
Uppity,
I have a bad feeling about Obama’s visit to Mexico and this story coming out on CNN about Whitehouse aide and family confirmed with Swineflu.
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/04/30/gibbs-white-house-aides-family-likely-swine-flu/
I think they’ve set our poor Messiah up……
Yes Surfer, I was just hearing about it on FOX. Not good.
hey gagirl, you know how those allergy people are a drain on the health care system!
Close the border? Don’t be silly. Biden has implied it would be better to close all the schools.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ya8LTeAyCFw&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fdeadenders%2Ewordpress%2Ecom%2F&feature=player_embedded
Besides, if the border were to be closed, how could all the illegals swarm here for free medical care (free for everyone except us, the taxpayers)?
Sorry, UW, I tried to copy the link .I don’t know why the video was embedded .
Hey UW I was doing some checking and I’ve made over 2,400 comments on your blog. Is that a record and if so do I win a Carmel Apple Walnut pie?
Cool, DE.
Crap Mary your over 3,800.

imust,
Just shows what a brilliant thinker zippo is. According to him, leave the barn door oper so all the rest of the horses can run out.
On the video I accidentally embedded @ 7:48 PM 9from DE’s site), the newscaster dismisses bobo’s analogy and office one that is vastly more apt– and which, of course, is way over jojo’s head.

“Crap Mary your over 3,800″
Uh-oh.
That’s ok Mary, I guess it’s a new feature of WP. Besides, it further advertises that someone should stuff a rag into that Bimbo Biden’s mouth and leave it there.
DE, you are all winners to me!
Some of you have been with me since my blogspot days! Amazing!
DE,
How do we know you’re not exaggerating the actual number of comments to create a widespread panic and a run on all available supplies of Caramel Apple Walnut pie?
surfergrrl
Imposible for DE to do a thing like that. He doesn’t even have political ambitions.
surfergrrl if I share my pie with you will you not report me to the FEC.
UW,
Commenters at TD today had the same youtube link problrm, with efforts to post links to videos insteadembedding the videos in the comments section. It was getting kind of crowded over there.
