I commented on the other thread that I believe Hillary is wearing the scarf as a matter of protocol. I don’t think in Egypt that women have to wear scarves in public. I have a friend that travels to Egypt a lot and she’s never specifically mentioned having to wear a head scarf, but she’ll tell you in a hurry about what she has to wear in Saudi Arabia.
I think maybe as a sign of respect or for some protocol purpose Hillary is wearing that scarf, maybe it has to do with the location. Where are they in this shot? Are they in a place considered holy? That might be the reason for the scarf, I notice they are both barefoot so that tells me they are.
Hillary knows proper protocol, unlike some people. She will have many more dealings with people in this part of the world than even Obama. As Secretary of State she is our representative to other countries so she would surely go the extra mile not to offend anyone.
Too bad they’re not worthy of respect.

I, too, see no reason for Hillary to dispense with protocol as yet. However, the whole picture is what incenses me–the notion that a man has no problem going bareheaded but a woman must cover herself. I have little patience with religion/culture that has such glaring double standards for humans. The institution of patriarchal oppression is formidable, indeed. I still have faith that Hillary is doing what she does best: using her brain and her smarts to get the job done by using whatever means necessary.

Somebody, you got it right. Although Egypt is not the most conservative Muslim nation, it would be a breach of international etiquette if the SOS showed up without at least a loosely tied scarf. Just good politics, nothing more nothing less. If there is any hope for her to mitigate the ass-kissing Indonesian that just bent over in front of the Muslim world, it would be to our advantage for her to look respectful of the local customs.

If you look at some of the full length shots they are barefoot, so that tells me they are definitely in a mosque and this is just a protocol/respect thing. The analogy of a woman covering her head in the Catholic church not too long ago is a good one.
I doubt Hillary wore that everywhere. Again from what I know of Egypt it is a far cry from Saudi Arabia and many women walk around in street clothes without scarves. Although some dress in burkas and scarves, but it’s not required by law there that I know of.
The only full length shot you have is at a distance, so you might not be able to notice their feet. I followed the link in the earlier thread where there is a large collection of these photos and there were a couple of close ups on the bare/socked feet of Hillary and Obama.
You do not wear shoes into a mosque, so I’m pretty sure that’s the story behind the scarf and the bare feet.

As far as Hillary wearing that head thingee, I don’t have a problem with it. She is showing respect in that Mosque. I wouldn’t but then again I am not SOS!
I remember Condoleeza Rice once saying that when we visit another country we observe their culture, so when we go to a Muslim country you wear headscarves, but if they come here, they have to abide by our culture. Its simple respect. I also remember seeing photos of Hillary while she was a First Lady visiting a Muslim country and she wore headscarves then as well. I applaud respecting other countries since it tamps down Arrogant American syndrome, I’m just glad Hillary was with bambi to keep him from selling America completely down the river!
Which brings up some food for thought. In our country it is NOT our culture to wear head scarves. Yet Muslims have the “right” to wear them here. Yet when we go to their country we do not have the “right” not to wear them. So who again is arrogant? Respecting the customs or culture of other countries is right. I just resent that nobody thinks they need to respect ours.
