The year is 1958.
The Soviets had launched Sputnik a few months before. The arms race between the USA and the USSR was accelerated and more feverish than ever. The Cold War was as cold as ice and the threat of a real war grew more ominous by the day.
Bomb shelters were built at the kind of pace at which we now all build a BBQ deck in the rear of our homes. Everyone who could afford one had one. People actually believed that if we ever were attacked, that days later, they would actually emerge from a concrete underground room as one of the Last Mutants On Earth amidst tumbleweeds and no food sources– just like the low-budget movies depicted. For some odd reason, this actually seemed preferable to death.
Young impressionable children like myself were learning what an air raid drill sounded and felt like. At school we learned to scramble to hide beneath our little kindergarten desks that were bolted to the floor at the sound of the deafening buzzer that rattled the school windows. We did this drill so often, we were in reflex mode, believing that, if our school were ever bombed, we would somehow actually remain as the only surviving thing beneath the only surviving desk. We were kids. We had no idea how ludicrous this drill really was. I must confess that not so long ago, when some knucklehead actually recommended protecting ourselves using duct tape–and duct tape was sold out in a matter of days, much to the glee of duct tape manufacturers– I was reminded of the stupidity of this time gone by. I was also reminded that stupidity and gullibility know no era. They reproduce themselves perpetually. Perhaps this is why people of my era hear scare terminology such as “global warming” (name suddenly changed to “climate change”) as just another way for today’s equivalent of bomb shelter contractors to make money by generating Fear. But I digress. I can do that. It’s my blog.
At home, we would hear the same kind of air raid buzzer out on the street. Fathers and other relatives who volunteered for “Civil Defense” would respond to these drills with flashlights, wearing what looked a lot like Construction hats. I never was exactly sure what purpose they would serve if we ever were attacked. I’m not so sure they knew either. All I can tell you is, to a little tyke like me, it was pretty damned scary at first — and then it just became routine. Brush your teeth. Eat your carrots. Air Raid.
The USSR really hated Americans and Americans really hated them right back, which was rather odd, since none of us ever met. All we knew was our leaders were very serious and “They” were The Enemy.
Enter a 23 year old long drink of water from Texas, named Harvey Lavan “Van” Cliburn, who had the audacity to enter the International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition — in Moscow.
Much as youtube sometimes annoys me with all the propaganda and all the “disappearing” information, sometimes the place amazes me. Today, I give you an example of why youtube amazes me: Van Cliburn, the winner of the 1958 Moscow Tchaikovsky Piano Competition. The man who melted the ice of the Cold War for one brief and very touching day–such that even the crusty and mean Nikita Kruschchev embraced him.
Here is a brief documentary of just how much Van Cliburn achieved that day in addition to winning the competition:
This was the time, young as I was, when I began to fall in love with Classical Music, at least subconsciously. There were times I appeared to be an odd ball for that, at a time when songs like Purple People Eater, Witch Doctor and other pretty lame songs dominated the (AM) radio and the 45s section of Woolworth’s — and at a time when the only thing about Classical music most kids my age knew was that Chuck Berry did a shake, rattle and roll tune called Roll Over Beethoven. But I didn’t care. My birthday was coming up and I remember clearly as if it were today that of all the gifts they showered me with, my favorite gift from my parents was an LP (monaural) of Van Cliburn performing Rachmaninoff Concerto No. 3, accompanied by Kirill Kondrashin. Young as I was, I somehow magically, if not instinctively, knew and felt that Concerto No. 3, not Purple People Eater, was for All Time, whether there was peace or war–and that it is just emotional enough even to break the ice of a very very Cold war. Thank you for that Van.
Below is a recording of Van Cliburn during a return trip to Moscow in 1962, welcomed and accompanied by one of The Enemy – Kirill Kondrashin.
Incidentally, Van Cliburn is still alive, although I don’t think he has recorded anything since the 70s. You can read 50-year-mark interviews with him here and here.

"This is not culture. This is not custom. This is criminal."
Uppity! How timely…I subscribe to an internet radio site, and by far, my favorite classical composer is Rachmaninoff. There is an actual recording of Sergei playing Prelude in C# Minor on the site as well. My mother played alot of Van Cliburn albums, and passed that love of classical piano along to me. Bless you for writing this piece.
Incidentally, there is a wonderful film about Van Cliburns piano teacher, Rosinna Lhevinne, that I saw on The Documentary Channel. She and her husband knew Sergei Rachmaninoff personally. I believe this is the link to the film:

In our world full troubles, and sometimes joy and sadness, yesterday and the day before..the past week had been trying times for the world. And I lost my long time former business partner.Yesterday morning (June 27th), he joined the likes of Ed, Farah and Micheal. He was only 54. I will remember him as someone who’s unselfish as a friend and truly caring to his family and realtives. He was a great man.
Thanks Ms UW, for the classical music. I needed to let go the tears and sadness alone.
FF, I am anticipating Neda Tees too. I will waer it in the memory of a woman who sacrificed her life for the women in her country, and many other countries.
What a wonderful gift that link is lrlandese. Thank you! I just updated this post, as I found a youtube link to a docu on his win in moscow.
joey, I am so very sorry for your loss. If you needed to cry, I am glad you did it here during the beauty of that music which is still alive.
When my mom died, she left behind a VERY large collection of classical music. Original recordings (most) by some of the top performers, symphony companies and conductors in the world. I have lugged this 300 pound collect around with me for ten years now and I finally got a turntable that records directly to CD. I sat down Friday to start the conversion and discovered I needed a part for it to work with the laptop. The order for that part has been shipped, and I will start the transfer of HUNDREDS of hours of fabulous classical music next week.
I grew up with it, I love it. Mom left a great legacy of taste for me. Thanks for this post. What a great way to wake up!
Thanks for the condolence, Ms Uw.
Yes, Joey. I am sorry about your friend. I just read your post. I had skipped by reading after listening as it was so interesting UW had posted this while I was just starting all these musical transfers.
My heart and prayers are with you.
What a treasure! When I was a kid my Dad had an LP of the London Philharmonic playing Tchaikovsky (Conductor was Stanley Black) that I used to play over and over till I practically wore it out. Although I must confess I took a bit stronger liking to his Dave Brubeck albums. I’ve had the privilege of seeing him live twice, Once in the 80’s while Paul Desmond was still alive, and you’ve never seen anything like Brubeck playing Blue Rondo ala Turk in person back in the day…
Ah, memories!
Thanks FF. He was cremated @4.00pm today. Me and the family, relatives & closed friends will throw his aces into the sea tomorrow morning. I will always have him closed as I worked at the ports and the sea almost every other day..
You really got me with this one, UW. Music is a language that transcends time, culture and ideology.
My piano was my escape during my youth, and continued to carry me safely to my adulthood while being the only creative child of a ruthless corporate giant and his professional corporate wife.
How many Saturday mornings did I hear my Dad say “Why aren’t you outside playing baseball?” only to hear me answer “Because I’m inside playing Rachmaninoff.”
DAD: “What’s that supposed to mean?”
ME: “It means if you can get one of those clowns to come up here and play this, I’ll go outside and play that. Now let me finish this before Ludwig shows up”
DAD: ‘Who’s Ludwig??”
ME: “Never mind…”
Many years (and one MMA) later, I still begin my day by letting my fingers do the walking across the keys for an hour or two.
Thanks for the music, Uppity. And thanks for prodding my memory to remind me of my earliest survival mechanism.
Joey, so sorry for your loss.
I’m having a problem.
I was wondering if anyone could help me navigate the health care system, especially in NY. I’m in over my head, I think.
P4P-
I may be able to be of help. What’s going on?
Thanks Anthony.
I grew up as you were, spent my youth learning & playing music of all kinds, including classicals and had less problem in schools than any other kids. Only difference between us was, I never knew who my parents were. The Priests & Nuns were not complaining cuz they had someone who could play Church Organ on Sunday Masses. Otherwise they went berserk (or pretending to be) with me strumming bealtes & elvis tunes.
I’m here, P4. What do you need to know? If you have a problem with your health insurer, I can steer you to the State site for resolution.
If you are looking to choose options, I can probably help you there too since I’ve pretty much experienced most of the insurers in NY in one form or another.
If you want a private communication, I can email you as well. Whatever you need.
Or I can create a tab for you and privatize it between us. Nobody will see what’s written but the two of us. That way we can communicate faster.
Uppity, thanks for twenty of the sweetest minutes I’ve spent since I went online.
joey, my condolences on the death of your friend and former partner. You will keep his memory alive, I know.
UW,
You can create a tab. Someone else may be able to help. Some of it might have to do with Medicaid.
joey-
Did you know that the lyrics to “House of the Rising Sun” fit perfectly with the music to “Amazing Grace”?
I performed that at a service I was coerced into by the nuns in Sunday school. They never asked me to play anything after that.
Ok what I am going to do is make a passworded tab and only you will get the password, put me on MOD in your blog and I will give it to you in message.
See tab PRVT. Go to your blog. Put “Uppity woman” in mod.
I’m assuming you want it private, right? If not, no need for a tab, just go ahead and tell us what’s up.
K sorry to interrupt everyone. I will delete these comments once P and I connect.
P4, I will be back in about 15 minutes.Neighbor needs to borrow a second BBQ and some lawn furn for a big party.
Ahhh, thank you for these clips. Have you ever seen such beautiful hands on a pianist? Even in the blurry film, you can detect those amazing hands.
I met him on a couple of occasions. I was 20 and the swing shift hostess at an SF Airport restaurant in the late ’70s. The Cliburn entourage would pass through regularly, and would call ahead to reserve the back room. He’d travel with at least a dozen people, half of them ancient. They’d kick back, order a feast with lots of desserts and wine, and by the end of their long evening they’d be having food fights and stuffing big tips into the waitpersons’ checkered pockets. We deduced that the only chance he got to kick back was when he was in transit, in those days before cell phones, where nobody could reach him.
Well, not everyone in the world. I know there are a few people here who have some exprience.
My neighbor is with Continental (44 years). She told me about a month ago Cliburn was on her flight to Scotland. I just remembered that. Interesting.
Now, shades of 2012?
http://news.aol.com/article/secretary-soldiers-arrest-honduran/546931
I’m not sure how to put someone in moderation. Will unapproving your comment do it?
k I’m back. Ok. check your blog.
Thanks Creeper.
Anthony, Huh???
*There is a house in New Orleans, they call The Rising. And It’s been the ruin of many a poor boy, and God I know I am one… My mother was a tailor, She sewed my new blue jean, My father was a gamblin’ man, down in New Orleans…… Played in A-minor
“Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound,
That saved a wretch like me.
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see”….. Played in Major (any Major chords)…
LOL Anthony I guess you could say it’s an outrages comparison!!! Too funny. Thanks for making me laugh.
Hey, at least he didn’t play Billy Jo McCallister jumping off the Tallahatchie bridge!
Methinks he meant the music, not the lyrics. And I have been comparing them in my head and I’ll be dipped. He’s right.
Ms UW, what has Billy Jo McCallister gotta do with “The House of Rising Sun & Amazing Grace? Which comment are ya refering to??
No,but I did sing “That Old Black Magic” as the congregation was leaving midnight mass one Christmas eve. (I confess I was very easily convinced by the organist, who was sharing shots of Jack with me up in the choir loft)
We were both dismissed, and that was a paying gig (neither of us had any regrets)
Anthony, that sounds like the Emily Dickenson “Yellow Rose of Texas” thing.
joey-
If you sing “House” to the tune of Amazing Grace, you;ll see what I mean.
UW-
Billy Joe would’ve been next, had I thought of it
Ahhhhhhhh the dictions, the ways of the tune’s pitch…I see it. Dang!!!LOL
Palin4Prez-
I’m not familiar with the Dickenson/Yellow Rose thing.
Care to elaborate? (pretty please?)
Country tune, Anthny..kinda legendary stuff
Sorry – I couldn’t resist when “That Old Black Magic” was mentioned. Another divine curse from mom – Ella!
A twentieth century myth has turned the Yellow Rose into one Emily D. West, a housekeeper in a hotel in New Washington, Texas, during the Texas Revolution.
Foot thumping FF, jazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz on girl!!
You can sing anything she wrote to “The Yellow Rose of Texas”
Billy Mays is dead!
http://970wfla.com/cc-common/news/sections/newsarticle.html?feed=124415&article=5668312
Comes in 4’s then?
Oh dear more deaths!!!!!!!
P4 – maybe, but not so sure OxyClean and OrangeGlo are up there with Farrah, MJ and Ed McMahon. But I feel bad for his family. He was only 50 as well. Jeesh.
RIP Billy
Perhaps a little more appropriate….
Can’t say I’m going to miss Mays’ voice blaring, but I am appropriately sympathetic
Palin4Prez, Freedom Fairy and joey-
Thanks for the info
FF-
Wish Ella was singing with me that long ago day. Thanks for the vid
Well Anthony, as I sit here on a hot Sunday afternnon (I tried to sit outside and read, but got too sleepy! LOL) I find it interesting all the things in the world that make a difference in the lives of our friends we know and of people we don’t. Cliburn, Mays, Ella, Jackson – and now the Goons in Iran are back at it beating those poor people to a pulp. 3000 today are reported, while Hondurans want to keep the sanctity of their Constitution in tact. Meanwhile, at home, Obama and Co are feeding ours through the shredder.
Anthony – that would have been a blast!
Mood Reset:
Uppity – I swear I won’t post video’s all day. I think….
Erykah Badu looking and sounding great with DK!
oh! mybad apostrophe!
Isn’t that a good one Anthony? LOVE Krall and her style. Benson and Badu just made it all the sweeter!
misplaced apostrophes will be punished severely.
my apostrophies
at least I noticed!
shit!
APOSTROPHES, dammit
Telling on yourself doesn’t get you any breaks.
I have a link somewhere about how parts of England are eliminating apostrophes on signs. It seems they think they are unnecessary anyhow.
misspelling will be punished severely.
Telling on yourself doesn’t get you any breaks.
How about if I tell on other people?
And what do the Brits know? They still spell kerb and gaol.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZJDNSp1QJA&feature=fvst
see if it works…enjoy
Yeah what do they know? They eat scones for Chrissakes.
Joey that was cool, and beautiful music!
Scones are fine so long as they don’t have raisins.
…….and a recipe called Spotted Dick.
um, yeah. More raisins.
Wait till You Know Who sees these posts.
…….ducking and running…
I do have a penchant for their shortbread though, so long as I can’t hear my arteries hardening.
Thanks joey. That was beautiful.
Joey, don’t worry about spelling. If u cn rd ths msg u shd chk my nu vid on tss.wdprs.cm
holy shit
meant to say:
joey that was beautiful FF, f u cn rd ths msg u shd chk my nu vid on tss.wdprs.cm
As to “spotted dick”, I’m keeping away from that (Hope it has something to do with Moby, or I’m gonna hide)
LOL. are you a Trifle bit worried?
http://www.kitchenchick.com/2004/09/imbb_8_english_.html
OMG YUM!!!!!!
(mom used to make these too!)
That was so touching, Joey.
Spotted Dick is a kind of pudding made with suet.
Anthony – I guess I couldn’t read enough of it to get the address! LOL
I make Trifles myself.
Glad y’all enjoy my fav. music. It always brought tears to my eyes…kinda remind me as human being. Touchy and sobbering.
Anthony, am not worried about spelling and ” ‘ “…only Ms UW and FFLet’s play Yann Tiersen “”Comptine d’un autre été”. K?
FF-
no, but it brings to mind something an 8 year old said when I was teaching an after school art program. We were talking about patterns and how they could be found in nature, and I had the students naming places that otherwise un-noticed patterns could be found. I heard the usual ‘leaves, trees, shadows’, and then griffin (from hell) said “How about on my dick?”
I had to bite the inside of my mouth to stop from laughing
FF-
Click on my name. You may be cracking up soon
Anthony !!!
OMG – love it! I was at the Stonewall last year, and just happened to be in NYC for Pride. What a trip!
On my way there now
Glad you enjoyed my vid
HAVE FUN! But Anthony – what is the name of the Piano Bar that used to be Thomas Pain’s home? I was FABULOUS and I liked it a lot better
&*)#$&!@ PainE
ROLF – I give up
IT was fabulous….
I am sitting slumped in an uncomfortable office chair with my feet on the table and can barely see the edge of the keyboard. It’s the only place I can get the wireless signal from across the street at my little old lady friends house. THAT’S a long story, but well….let’s just say I am gonna have to spring for wireless soon if I ever want to be comfortable while typing! I woud loso like to get the lap top off the DR table for a change!
FF-
“Piano Bar that used to be Thomas PainE’s home”
“Marie’s Crisis”, I think
Anthony – thanks (and ROFL to the spelling h/t)
I cannot remember, but it’s some place all the show folks go to sing. A real dive, but it was great.
yep – that’s the place!
http://www.yelp.com/biz/maries-crisis-new-york
55 Grove. Will most likely swing by there later too
Off to see the wizard,
A
Lived, died…all the same in the end.
“To walk downstairs into this old West Village bar is to step out of time a bit. As an amicable regular might tell you, the room first opened in the 1850s as a prostitutes’ den, became a boy bar by the 1890s, and lasted through Prohibition, when it was known as Marie’s (the “Crisis” came from “The Crisis Papers,” by Thomas Paine, who died in the same house).”
Jeesh – can’t the folks get anything right? As it turns out – not EXACTLY the “same” house…if this is to be believed…
http://www.forgotten-ny.com/STREET%20SCENES/Paine/paine.html
…and all that time I was “hovering” I thought of the ghost of TP.
and in the case of those NASTY bathrooms – even more so, as that was all the TP that existed….
Here’s something:
http://newyork.citysearch.com/profile/11349561/
Now I’m going out for a pint of Stella and many shots of Makers’ Mark
You stay sober, sonny boy or Aunt Uppity will slap you upside your head!
Don’t make me come over there!
“stupidity and gullibility know no era. They reproduce themselves perpetually”
UW,
Thanks for today’s gift, including the stroll down memory lane and some of its byways..
joey,
So sorry.
I know this is a stupid question, but WHY does everyone Obama picks who has a tax issue gets off scott-free? I KNEW I owed the IRS for 2006 and set up payment arrangements immediately, ad paid in full every month til it was paid off. Complete with PENALTIES.
Now, here is another one (I missed) and she gets to dance away unscathed:
http://baroccoliobamination.blogspot.com/2009/06/shocker-new-obama-appointee-has-tax.html
It is beginning to look like we will no longer have elections in this country. These people just snub their noses at the LAW AND US. They must not think it matters anymore.
Do we?
Don’t the Obots see that Obama’s Administration IS AT LEAST AS CORRUPT as the Bush Administration. At LEAST?
I am so sick of this crap I could scream!
Why don’t they make GAY women like this?
“You stay sober, sonny boy or Aunt Uppity will slap you upside your head!”
“Don’t make me come over there!”
Too late, Auntie. C’mon over – the more the merrier (got a house full – 22 happy slurring tipsy etc)
Happy day,
A.
Altos rule.
So how do you know she’s not, FF?
Excellent piece, UW. Thank you for having the guts to draw the analogy between
Global warming/climate change and the fear-mongers of the Cold War.
Joey, sorry for your loss.
She’s married to Elvis Costello and has 2 kids. Not a “given” she’s not gay, but a pretty good indicator!
She’s married to Elvis Costello? Interesting.
Keep looking, I’m sure there’s at least 1 gay woman like that.
ACK you were in spam NES. I just saw you there. Sorry! It’s probably because you accidently put a ‘w” in your screen name and WP thought you were somebody new.
“Keep looking, I’m sure there’s at least 1 gay woman like that.”
10 years in Florida. Zip.
Now, if I wanted to drink Miller Light, cut my hair, wear a backwards baseball cap and scream “GO BUCS!” I would be in um…hog heaven.
Wait! Maybe THAT’S the problem!
(mybad)
Um, I don’t want to tread in any weird territory, but are you saying you need to glam up to get a glam gal?
‘I’m back from the Diana Krall Ravinia concert. Even though it rained through the entire concert, and we had lawn tickets under the stars and trees (the stars were covered by the storm clouds – the trees were not), it was FABULOUS !
And her 2 kids with Elvis Costello are twin boys who are 2 years old and love “The Wheels on the Bus Go Round”. They sing it in the tour bus….or so the wonderful Ms Krall said last night. Can you imagine DK singing “The Wheels on the Bus”?
I loved all the videos today! That animated French one was beautiful. I just heard on the news that Billy Mays was on a flight yesterday that had a “hard landing” and that when he got off, he said something had hit him “on the head”. I hope this wasn’t another Natasha Richardson-type brain trauma.
Joey, I am sorry about your loss. I hope thoughts of your friend’s smiles lighten your heart.
Happy Pride Day!
P4P. No. They do. Me? Well…think more Lauren Bacallish.
Leslie – Glad you had a great time. The “hard Flight” yesterday MAY have been the US Air flight whose front tires blew up when it landed in Tampa.
Wow. That would be so strange. I haven’t watched local news today, but I am sure there will be plenty to learn tomorrow.
P4. Tampa area has been the WORST place I have ever lived with regards to meeting gay women. I have had a few um, encounters, but for the most part, the available roster is pretty, um BOYsterous. Not my thing AT ALL.
Why do I stay? Business here is the best I have ever had when working for myself. It’s a trade off, I suppose.
Diana Krall is Canadian. So, she’s not even domestic
FF,
I’m still trying to figure out how to pick up straight women.
LOL looks like we need a How To Score tab.
How come gay men are more fun to hang out with than straight men?
P4 – That’s gonna be my next step! LOL
NOT!
BTDT – not fun! LOL!
Uppity – :”HOW” is not the problem, it’s “WHAT”
ROFL!
Because they are not threatened by women
They just want to go through your shoe rack
LOL! Noooooooooo way! You touch my shoes, you DIE.
I don’t know, but they are the best to hang with. (gay men)
Most of my friends are L or G. My neighbor (across the hall) asked me if I were L and when I said no, she said I must be and I don’t know it. When I asked her how long before she knew she was gay, she said “right away”. So I asked her why she thought I might not know, she said because so many of my friends are (gay).
I said that I don’t check credentials when I choose my friends – except if they supported Obama. Then I won’t have anything to do with them …. She shut up then.
FF ~ LOLOLOL!!!!
Besides, I keep them in plastic see thru boxes. I know. It’s anal retentive. Just shut up.
okay….what’s BTDT ?
Hey I’ve been to plenty of parties where we were the only straight couple. We were like a conversation piece. lol.
Been There Done That
;-D
o.m.g.
how dumb am I ?
no responses, please.
“Besides, I keep them in plastic see thru boxes. I know. It’s anal retentive. Just shut up.”
STRUGGLING….
:-X
ROFL!
See! Maybe your neighbor is right. Too dumb to know! HAHAHAHAHA!
(please know I am kidding, o just love a set-up!)
I am LMAO here….Uppity, how about a “How to Score a SANE PERSON” tab? I seem to have no problem attracting,er, the other kind.
crap
o-i
time to turn on the light
I’d probably be better off if I were gay, Leslie. Men are so much work!
Well, plastic see-thru boxes beat the heck out of having 10 shoe boxes falling on my head when I try to see what’s in the one on the bottom.
(and it might be just a touch anal retentive, but who’s to say that’s not normal?)
Isnt’ there a tee shirt that says “Normal is over-rated” ?
UW,
Do they ask you if you sleep in separate beds and put on formal wear for dinner?
Crazy people are afraid of me. lol.
” Do they ask you if you sleep in separate beds and put on formal wear for dinner?”
ROFLMAO!
What an image!
Does who ask, p4?
Leslie. Move to Florida. Flip-Flops look stupid in shoe boxes
oh ok i get it. Nahhhhh P4, they just laugh like we are wierd. lol. I have a lot of G L friends. if you are into cultural things, you are more apt to run into gay men then some guy in a baseball cap.
If I go to a tea party, I’ll have a better chance of not picking up an obot
See? Leslie understands. Plastic boxes keep things neat and make it easy to find the shoes you want.
ROFL P, I can guarantee you won’t be picking up an obot there. Unless she’s holding a club.
FF ~ for that and so many other reasons, I don’t plan to move to Florida any time soon.
I remember when love had nothing to do with what political party you were in. Nobody cared. Now come on, P4, couldn’t you fall in love with a young version of fiesty Me even though she’s a Democrat?
I sold a home in FLA. I hate it there. Besides, I don’t like reptiles moving in with me.
I’m kind of an atypical male. I have no interest in sports and I’m a fan of the romantic comedy. But then, I also consider myself at the top 2% of the intellect scale. Whenever I go out, I have little doubt that’s the case
At this point, even I would date an Ob….
nevermind
Are you kidding? I broke off an engagement after I found out what a dyed in the wool conservative my first “betrothed” was.
unfortunately, I didn’t believe the second one. I married him. It didn’t last – 22 years later, we split and he married a woman who insisted on using duct tape and plastic wrap on the windows after 911 !!! lol
So P, do you prefer women who give you an intellectual challenge?
Um, P4 – with all due respect, you are now sounding like Mark Sanford…..
just sayin’
LOL
I bet Sanford runs off with Maria.
Or a microphone
“he married a woman who insisted on using duct tape and plastic wrap on the windows after 911 !!! lol”
please say you are making this up
I gotta go put together tomorrow’s posts. Bummer. I would rather play.
P4…..
…I also consider myself at the top 2% of the intellect scale. Whenever I go out, I have little doubt that’s the case… LOL !
Are you friends with miq2xu?
Not if P4P gets there first!
Bahahaahaha on the duct tape. Serves him right. At least if he stuck with you, you would have found more creative uses for duct tape and plastic wrap. lol.
I gotta go too gang. P4 XOXOXOXOXO
Leslie, glad you had a nice time tonight. What a great evening.
I have to actually work tomorrow, so I’ll be here early – and late,
Have fun y’all!
nite
You don’t marry the mistress. Well, some do but that works out poorly.
UW, I do like a smart girl. I do not run into nearly enough smart people in general.
FF ~
I’m not creative enough to make up sh*t like that.
When I heard about it from my kids, i nearly lost it I laughed so hard.
I must say it was hard to keep a straight face around her from that point on. One time, I nearly asked her where I could find good duct tape. But then I thought better of it. It was at my ex’s funeral.
Leslie – ROFL!
OH. My. God.
Emily Post comes in handy, eh?
Ah so she killed him.
Sapiosexual: One who finds intelligence the most sexually attractive feature.
Got to go….I’ve got to get up early to get to work.
We got an email on Friday afternoon warning us that we might have to “start cutting back”, and “not to expect any salary increases this year”.
WTF. We haven’t had salary increases in my department in 3 years. All I want right now is to get through the next 2 weeks, so I can take my 2 week vaca and get some rest.
Irl~ I pass a restaurant – or something (it’s never open that early) – every day on the bus with the name “Irlandese”. Is it yours?
And really, I promised myself I’d start getting to bed before midnight so I am less crabby in the morning (noon and evening).
Night all!
BUICK Commercial on tonight with a faux director who says :I am the Robin Hood of Directors”
and a LOOOOONG pause before he says something stupid about having a zen moment with the car.
Guess Zer0 is writing the ad copy now. I thought it was such an inappropriate line to use in an ad for a company that had zillions in bailouts
I got the salary announcement in January. Next up, is outsourcing to China. Not only are we making garbage overseas, it’ll cost us more in the end and we’ll lose our major customers. And these are places you’d have heard of.
Leslie–I wish! No, I’m in eastern Oregon. I stole the name ‘Irlandese’ from a Maeve Binchy short story. Which city is the restaurant in?
P4,
If you live near a university, pick a field of study, go to the appropriate library or section of the main library, and hang out in the stacks. A smart young woman is bound to show up after a while.
That’s “where.” No idea about “how.”
UPP! It was still like that mid 60’s Ca — duck and cover.
You and I have same thoughts today.
Listen, please believe me when I tell you, I know a LOT of people. I do not know ONE person who owns a Buick.
Good advice Mary. Also go to a museum and sit in front of a profound series of art. And wait.
Go to the symphony.
LOL! I vote for the symphony. You probably won’t ‘meet’ anyone, but you won’t care.
I’m still trying to get over the see-thru boxes duct tape and plastic wrap. Good to hear that funerals still prompt good manners.
Sobered up, the house is clean, and I think everyone’s gone – pair of strange shoes sticking out from under the bed. Hope they’re empty. (Do I need plastic boxes?)
Good night all. Nice hanging out with you
You are so right Ir. At the symphony, I am on another planet and couldn’t care less who is around me.
When you FEEL that music move right through you.
Get a magnet dog and jog with him.
I actually prefer to go alone. I don’t like having the flow of music interrupted by comments. Plus, half the time, I’m watching my daughter play her violin. Now THAT puts me in a good place
PRVT?
Oh no, we never say a word during the symphony. Not. One. Word. lol.
PRVT is a private tab I made for a member who had a problem he needed to sort out. Just pretend it’s not there. K?
private not pervert. lol.
Nite Anthony. I will deal with your misbehavior in the morning.
Tanglewood summer music festival and the Boston symphony. A blanket, a bottle of wine. Oh my. Ever been there?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tanglewood
They have this open sided music shed. The music wafts onto the grounds. It’s just so wonderful. And often, birds gether at the cathedral type peak of the building……and chirp to the symphony. No kidding.
I’m a West-Coaster. Hollywood Bowl. Dorothy Chandler Pavillion. Schnitzer Hall (Portland, OR). I’ve been to quite a few music festivals in my time. All of them–wonderful.
“I bet Sanford runs off with Maria.”
Not if she catches the vid of his tears and flapdoodle act. And not if she finds out that the whole world now knows about her tan lines.
Ever so sorry, Curious, not nosy. Hope all works out well for him. He’s in good hands, UW.
Sanford will be over his mid-life crisis soon. Nothing like a bucket of ice-cold reality to put out that trite little campfire.
Irlandese,
Though I had been thrilled to get the tickets to hear him, even Itzhak Perlman didn’ t make the Hollywood Bowl likable for me.
And that’s the tame part.
Listen, five stolen days is nothing compared to having each other around all the time. Can you say……..fizzle…?
If I were she, I would be embarrassed close to death over the release of his emails. I mean I would be mortified.
Mary you would LOVE Tanglewood.
Irlandese Said:
“Sanford will be over his mid-life crisis soon.”
LOL
I am sure she is mortified beyond belief–to realize what a schmuck she was schtupping.
Ozawa Hall

If she’s not mortified, I would worry about her. lol.
Oh man, might as well have snapped photos.
Uppity,
You HAVE to read this article from Rolling Stone called”The Great American Bubble”…

Oh, I forgot all about McMenamin’s Edgefield! Now this place is fabulous for concerts. I’m taking my girl to see Heart in September …bunches of other things you can do there. They even have a small glass-blowing studio on the grounds…
http://www.edgefieldconcerts.com/
Check out the link to ozawa hall. Don’t forget to check out the interior of this place.
UW, you know I’d love a place where the birds chirp in time to the music.
Unless yon Maria is into exhibitionism, she’ll dump the overage Romeo pronto. I sincerely hope his wife does the same.
Wow that looks good Ir.
Yeah it would be about right if he lost both of them. Mary I really want you to look at Tanglewood’s hall named for their most famous music director whom I know you also admire.
Great link, UW. Looks like a fabulous place to enjoy a summer evening listening to just about anything.
I’d be an EastCoaster, but I hate extreme cold in the winter and humidity in the summer. That effectively cancels out anything east of the Mississippi.
speaking of complete heaven, there’s a little summer opera house in cooperstown. Glimmerglass. Opens up to opera under the stars.

The McMenamins chain is awesome….they buy up all kinds of old places and turn them into pubs. The Edgefield is right outside of Portland, and I have had some Fun Times at this place. Click Hotels, then Edgefield on the Homepage….

Ozawa Hall:
Since I’m in love with that ethereal pixie Ozawa, I’m already 7/8 disposed toward the facility, though I would have opted for the grass-and-blanket. too.
I haven’t been anywhere near Boston/New York/East Coast since 1986. I want to see all of these places!
Thanks for all the links today, UW; everything from Rachmaninoff to Tanglewood. So much for having a ‘day off’.
G’nite, all
UW,
What a special day you made for us. Thank you so much.
xoxo,
Mary
UW,
Forgot to say that those tall, cathedral-like windows stage rear add a sense of awe. The celing is an enchantment. Oh, thank you.
Thanks Mary, NES and Leslie for the condolence. My friend’s asses have thrown into the sea early this morning (29th June) according to his hindu religion.
Thanks again Ms UW, for everything… i need this place to let go, heal, move on and laugh again. Thank you everyone for letting me be a pert of the PUMA pack.
You’re welcome Mary. These are places I have enjoyed for a long time. Yes, indeed, he is a most magnificent pixie!
Joey you are always welcome here and revered.
Mary, normally when we go, we buy tickets for the shack but we only do that in case it rains. Then we just sit outside and picnic to Mozart.
LOL..not “asses” but I meant “ashes”
Oh dear, Ms UW will fine me for the mis-spelling huh LOL
aaaaw MS UW thank you
I’m always a bit late…..we were out of town and out of internet range, which can be a delight sometimes…..
Joey, my heart goes out to you and your loss. Make sure to take all of the time you need to mourn and celebrate your friend’s life.
Thinking about loss always makes me remember how much I appreciate the gifts in my life……and this group is one of those gifts…
Loved Glimmerglass…..
Grrr. Lost my comment.
At the Hollywood Bowl, a totally outdoor facility, patrons picnic before the concert begins on blankets they spread on the concrete walkways The charm of eating on the sidewalk always escaped me.
A blanket on the grass of a warm summer’s evening, however, is another matter. Of course nowadays, it’s highly unlikely that I could get down that low, or if I were to manage it, ever get up again.
If the Pixie were conducting at Tanglewood, and if I could gaze at that wonderful ceiling during the concert, I would spring for a box seat.
Do they ever shine colored floodlights through the hide windows from outside into Ozawa Hall? Might be pretty.
