4th of July and food for thought.

I copped this from Bad Habit, a blog owned by our own  beloved regular Mary Ellen AKA Nunly. I think it’s the perfect post for today.

Fifty-six men signed the Declaration of Independence, but it’s not often that we hear about what they endured because of their mutual pledge to stand up for our Independence from Britain.

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons in the Revolutionary War, another had two sons captured. Nine of the fifty-six fought and died from wounds or the hardships of the Revolutionary War.

What kind of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners, men of means, well educated. But they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British navy. He sold his home and his properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.

Thomas McKean was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him and poverty was his reward.

Vandals or soldiers or both, looted the properties of Ellery, Clymer, Hall, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr. noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his Headquarters. The owner quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.

John Hart of New Jersey was driven from his wife’s bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished. A few weeks later he died from exhaustion and a broken heart.

Lewis Morris and Philip Livingston suffered similar fates.

What kind of sacrifices do we see from those in our present Congress and Senate? They rarely take the time to read legislation before they vote on it, because after all…that would mean they couldn’t deny that they knew about the tax breaks they gave their favorite campaign contributor. Many of them line their pockets with money from special interest groups such as credit card companies, mortgage companies, or big oil companies. Some use taxpayer money so they can go on boondoggle trips with their families or they “investigate” golf courses all over the world.

How often does our Congress actually work? Below, Uncle Jay will explain ….

Many citizens of today take their liberties for granted and for some reason, are not opposed to having their rights and freedoms taken away from them, as long as it’s being taken away from the political party they are affiliated with. Isn’t it about time we start holding our elected officials accountable for their actions…whether they be Republican, Democrat or Independent?

  2. Great Stuff! Its good to be reminded of what Our Founders went through to give us what we are slowly (or not so slowly) allowing to give up.

    And Uncle Jay – thanks. It’s simply amazing about Congress. All that time off to “work” in their home districts. Ya know, I hardly EVER hear about a “town hall” or “open house” for the people in my local Congressional District, or by my Senators, where we can go chat about the issues that affect our lives. Maybe they have them on the golf courses and I just don’t know cuz I don’t play golf…

    I’m straightening up the house and going to a great party down the street later today. Tons of great food, a fabulous house on the water (Boca Ciega Bay) with a line-of-sight view up and down the Gulf Beaches. Saint Pete Beach does a HUGE fireworks display, as do many of the communities along the Beaches, so we are treated to “surround sound” fireworks all evening! There is also a Patriots Boat Parade that I hope will come by.

    It will be fun!

  33. Hello Everybody. Listen, I am using a friend’s computer. I have a hardware problem on my laptop and can’t get it fixed today due to it being the 4th. I will check in when I can but I can’t keep a screen, it fades to black after a few minutes. It happened while i was watching an uncle jay vid of all places. Anyways, I can’t do much so bear with me if you don’t see me.

  38. I have been watching a reinactment of the Revolution of the America against
    England.
    Ben franklin was from a new government set up by a sort of coup- he went to
    France for help and France wasnt in a big rush to help because of this.
    so how is this so different from what happened in the Honduras.
    If America had not gotten help from France, do you think we would be around. I
    think we have to get it out and support Honduras new government against being
    completely cut off from all other countrys and esp our country. This is just
    not acceptable- I am not very good at
    writting articles and connecting dots so i hope someone out there will take the

    Venezuela’s third-largest bank on Friday – making the state the largest player
    in the nation’s banking system.

    The purchase of the Spanish-owned Banco de Venezuela gives Chavez’s socialist
    government control over more than one-fifth of bank deposits as he tightens his
    grip over the economy.

    The acquisition will “strengthen the public banking system,” which favors
    sectors including agriculture, energy, housing and tourism, Finance Minister Ali
    Rodriguez said in a statement.

    In May, the Venezuelan government agreed to pay Spain’s Grupo Santander $1.05
    billion for the bank, ending months of stalled negotiations.

    At the time, Banco de Venezuela had 3.2 million clients, 10 percent of the
    country’s deposits and 6,000 employees.

    Combined with other state banks, the government will now control about 21
    percent of deposits and 16 percent of loans, a payroll of 15,000 employees and
    651 bank branches.

    The deal went into effect on Friday with an initial payment of $630 million. The
    rest will be paid in two equal installments in October and December.

    Like the rest of the economy, Venezuela’s banking sector is already highly
    regulated, with the government dictating interest rates and commissions.

    Under Chavez, Venezuela has nationalized major players in the steel, electricity
    and other sectors, including four major oil projects, since 2007.

    The Venezuelan consulting firm Ecoanalitica calculates those nationalizations
    have cost Chavez’s government some $23 billion.

  58. I have a wonderful 9 lb pork shoulder cooking veeeery slowly at the moment. The pork will be falling apart and “pulled” with two forks, NOT chopped. I’ve made up a batch of homemade mustard and vinegar based sweet sauce, and we’ll be off to a cookout with friends later.

    This girl from the Carolinas is going to serve up some genuine Carolina Pulled Pork sammiches, to let these damn Texans taste what REAL barbeque from the sweet bosom of Almighty God is supposed to be. ;)

    Just got home and had 3 more emails from Penguin. “Methinks he doth protest too much!” I think he must’ve read that I have somewhat of a soft spot for penguins and he darn near convinced me of his innocence. Thanks to all the uppity womenz here, I’ve regained my sanity and am no longer accepting emails from him.

    It continues to rain here, and yet the picnickers keep coming. (I live just over a block from the beach and park) this is the one day of the year that we don’t get in the cars unless it is an emergency. the minute we vacate our street parking spots, they are snatched up faster than you can say “the penguin did it”.

    Hope your Fourth is dry and you have lovely fireworks.

    “if it boots up connect video output to an external display to test the video component. usually there’s a keyboard sequence to toggle btwn internal & external display.
    also you can boot to a windows install CD or any other boot CD to isolate a video driver problem. there’s an old WinXP “critical’ update that messes up the vga driver.
    i’ve revived dead laptops by pulling the internal battery, shorting terminals, then re-seat. that’s the nickel-sized internal bat. the process clears internal instruction (CMOS).
    start with the first test.”

    This was written in the style of one pretending to be amazed that so many people in a small town like Wasilla appear to know one another, support one another, and take on big projects together. Apparently that is uncommon in New York. Rather than recognize that leaders of a community often mobilize to accomplish projects, the writer offered this up as an unusual and questionable association of special interests.

    To the extent several websites, most notably liberal Alaska blogger Shannyn Moore, are now claiming as “fact” that Governor Palin resigned because she is “under federal investigation” for embezzlement or other criminal wrongdoing, we will be exploring legal options this week to address such defamation. This is to provide notice to Ms. Moore, and those who re-publish the defamation, such as Huffington Post, MSNBC, the New York Times and The Washington Post, that the Palins will not allow them to propagate defamatory material without answering to this in a court of law. HA

    The park is three blocks from my house so we sat on our front lawn and watched the great fireworks display. It doesn’t get better then that.

    Uppity, this post is awesome! I just reread the Declaration of Independence this weekend…. WOW …

    A reminder for me is what we need to keep in mind is our founding fathers were wholly conscious of the necessary process of establishing in writing a list of grievances, among other things, based on the fact that issues brought up to their rulers were ignored and they had no real legal system here under British rule.

    This totally different than what was occurring in Honduras and Zelaya’s supposed going to the people to reform the constitution … legitimate governments care about legitimate processes … and I’m quite convinced that Zelaya did not no matter how the MSM tries to spin it.
