Sacrifice for Thee, Not Me. That’s why we are spending $376 Million to renovate the White House

Qu'ils mangent de la brioche!!!!!!

I……I don’t even know what to say to you, America, but this is about as In Your Face as it gets.

Sacrifice. For Thee, Not Me.

NEWSCORE – The White House welcomed construction crews early Saturday morning local time to launch a $376 million, four-year renovation project, the largest improvement plans on the executive mansion in more than 50 years, Bloomberg News reported.

“This is the biggest upgrade since the complete renovation of the executive mansion in the Truman era,” Bob Peck of the General Services Administration told Bloomberg News Friday.

Upgrades will include a new heating, cooling, electrical and fire-alarm systems for the East and West Wings.

The price tag is more than 100 times the total cost of building the White House in the 1790s, Bloomberg reported. Congress approved funding for the project in 2008.

Oh well it was already approved so we might as well just go ahead. I mean it’s not like unemployment hasn’t moved to 10% and higher since then and  it’s not as iff the market collapsed your savings or retirement funds or anything. It’s not as if we aren’t Trillions of dollars in debt or anything.  It’s not as if fishermen are probably out of a job for life, what with millions of gallons of oil being dumped into the Gulf for the third straight week, with dead wildlife washing ashore all over the place. And it’s not as if that threatens our food supply or anything. Well, YOUR food supply, not ours. Wink Wink.

Just know, we are making those Hard Choices for you.

 We feel your pain! That’s why we know you won’t mind living your life comfortably in a vicarious kind of way way through us — during this time of your foreclosure.

After all, it worked for Imelda and Ferdinand, didn’t it?

Sure it did, sir. And that’s why the GOP just took your own state.. Keep up the good work!  Those of us who figured you out in 2008 are very impressed!

  1. $376 million. Wow! I hope it sucks having a construction crew around for 4 years.

  2. It’s just a measly $7000 per square foot. Gotta have a nice place for the rats.

  3. They must be using all those $500 hammers the pentagon is always purchasing.

  4. Maybe Halliburton is doing the work.

  5. Doesn’t that seem excessive. $376 million dollars for renovations? You could bulldoze the entire place and rebuild it for less than $20 million.
    That AC system must be geothermal designed and approved by Alvin himself.

  6. More of those saved or created jobs.

  7. While I can understand a new furnace – had to have mine replace last year (30+ years old and only because replacements were no longer available), I don’t understand how TPTB don’t understand that in the current economic climate this is really bad PR. I also don’t understand why all this has to be done at the same time – this is major work. Haven’t the maintenance folks being doing their jobs previously, because if they had, there would have been ongoing activitiy over the years. I paint every three years, have a furnace cleaning every year, duct cleaning every seven years, check the attic every year for vermin, caulk every year etc. Seems to me that the folks in charge of the maintenance should be discharged cause if all this has to be done, some people haven’t been doing their job properly.

  8. No Bid Contract I’m sure.

    Holmes on Homes would do it for a lot less and he would GET IT RIGHT!

  9. It must be Tim The Tool Man Taylor doing this and they budgeted doing it 5 times.

  10. Nice AC upgrade, considering so many people can no longer afford to turn on their air conditioners if they have one.

  11. Yep we finally had to brake down at turn it on. Dreading the first bill, we have it at 83 in the day and 79 at night.

  12. Frightening thought: the place is being renovated to Michelle’s taste.

  13. HT, you can bet the furnace works just fine in the WH.

  14. Point me to the Bastille please time for Louis and Marie to go!! Revolution!!!

  15. This is completely unconscionable. What are they thinking? They are thinking, aren’t they?

  16. That’s easy. They’re thinking: Screw you, peasants.

  17. Let them eat cake!

  18. Maybe that’s why the rat was running out of the WH, worried about living in such a tacky place.

  19. I don’t have central air, but I know it’s really expensive for my place, which is a measly 1250 sq ft (big enough for me and four other adults – gruesome twosome and partners) We use window fans to circulate the air, and when it gets really hot, I have window ac units that I can clean regularly, but we only use them about a week total. I am fortunate, there are people that don’t have a home or live in a hovel. There are people going hungry, without jobs. There are people starving. There is a massive oil spill that could impact the entire east coast of the Americas. $376Million? Isn’t there a better use for that money?

  20. Hey thanks for the idea imust. I updated the photo caption.

  21. And these people are Democrats?

  22. Gas and electric are horrendously high in NY. It’s just horrendous. I run my central air because I would die if I didn’t, but the bills are simply frightening. I can see where people are not running them. They simply can no longer afford it. And of course, taxes are about 25% of the bill, which is already too high even without the taxes. In NY, the public service commission is owned lock stock and barrel by the utility companies. They hire former members all the time besides. It’s all just one big happy family screwing the people daily.

    One year, our gas and electric company raised the rates and came right out and said it was because the winter was very warm and they didn’t sell as much as they anticipated. no kidding. The PSC approved the hike. In NY, the PSC has also approved a ruling that says if a municipality tries to pull away from a power company and generate its own electricity, the power company gets an “exit” fee that is set by………the power company. If this isn’t extortion, I don’t know what is.

    At least one huge power company in NY is owned by a company in England.

    I don’t buy oil, but I can imagine a lot of seniors in NY who did froze to death last year.

  23. No they aren’t Democrats, imust. We are Democrats. They are Totalitarian Regressives.

  24. The electric companies all have that same scam going UW- if we conserve, they raise the rates because their profits went down. If we use too much they raise the rates to “encourage” conservation. It’s a no win for all us peasants.

    I just sat here in front of the computer for a while- 376 million? For a renovation? I know the fraud was wanting an indoor hoops court- I think I remember him saying something about getting rid of the pool to put it in- but he could have a whole indoor sports venue for that kind of money-

    376 million? of OUR money??? In these troubled times? And it’s a four year project? Calling that race a little early isn’t he?

  25. Uppity, have you got a dehumidifier? We have heat that is suffocating, but it’s because it’s humid. I don’t run AC more than a week, but I do run a dehumidifier (less electricity) and it makes a huge difference.

  26. Talk about your “Extreme Home Makeover”……do you think the $376 million will qualify for the “cash for caulkers” program?

  27. Oh, BTW, I think it’s obscene that the royal couplet are spending over 300Mil on upgrades while they are lecturing people about doing more with less.

  28. Must be nice to live where it’s warm- here in NW PA- I think we might use the window fans maybe two weeks total in a year.
    This year has been so cold, the asparagus bed has not been producing anywhere near it’s normal bounty. Normally by this time- we are sick of asparagus- not this year.
    What ever happened to spring, then summer? Nope- we had a week of spring- back in April I think- May has been cold and rainy- the rain is not unusual- but this cold is ridiculous.
    Think I will ever again see a summer where I can take the blankets off the beds?

  29. Gobal cooling PMM…..

  30. Speaking of asparagus……sauteing some right now. Also got some corn on the cob (still in husks) grilling on the BBQ….drinking Fat Tire Amber Ale with lime. Might as well enjoy life now before the Royal Couple comes after me to pay for their Royal Renovations.

  31. Rut Roh Scooby!

    WASHINGTON — A new American intelligence analysis of a deadly torpedo attack on a South Korean warship concludes that Kim Jong-il, the ailing leader of North Korea, must have authorized the torpedo assault, according to senior American officials who cautioned that the assessment was based on their sense of the political dynamics there rather than hard evidence.

  32. Kim Jong is doing this for his son…..he is sick, sonny boy will be taking over and he needs to assert his son’s strength before he takes over.

  33. PMmon, good grief, I’m north of you and my asparagus are thigh high. Mind you, I grow them for the beautiful fern, not for food, but the little devils have been coming up for at least two months – and I knew it was not normal. This whole year – weather wise has not been normal – we have had over 80 degree weather already, then sudden drop to normal temperature of 50 degrees. And not Al Goricle hasn’t visited us recently, although every time I see him in the news, I remember what my beloved Mom used to tell me – “Be careful about what you ask for, cause you just might get it”

  34. Hi all – I have not yet read all these comments, but when I did a drive by earlier in the day, something struck me as odd in the story…I am sorry if anyone already caught this….

    ““This is the biggest upgrade since the complete renovation of the executive mansion in the Truman era,” Bob Peck of the General Services Administration told Bloomberg News Friday.”

    now I may be wrong (cough) but didn’t Jacqueline Kennedy take on the renovation of the Executive Mansion, and HELPED RAISE THE MONEY to do so?

    And even though this money was “approved by Congress in 2008″ you can bet your sweet bippie they didn’t approve it for George. Obama must be the “first since Truman” to restore America’s White House? Gimme a Fucking Break.

  35. “One year, our gas and electric company raised the rates and came right out and said it was because the winter was very warm and they didn’t sell as much as they anticipated.”

    They do that here, too, Uppity. Everyone conserves and freezes their asses off and the stupid power company raises the rates because they didn’t get to sell enough electricity. To add insult to injury, our stupid government decides to add a “conservation tax” to motivate people to use less. They just get you coming and going.

  36. Yes, FF. jackie did do that.

  37. Hrrumph, UW

    It’s amazing.

  38. Got a better one. Two years ago we had a drought and were ordered to conserve water or be fined. Then they said they didn’t make enough money because we conserved and raised the rates to make up for their loss.

  39. I am so SICK of the Media and the Government making shit up, or leaving stuff out, or bullshitting Americans.

    I cannot believe that people just ignore crap. I cannot even watch ABC Evening News anymore with Charlotte. I go apoplectic. I have to pour a second scotch and go sit on the lanai and smoke while she is watching. The FLAT OUT LIES they tell are unconscionable

  40. DE – right on. I was just going to report the same thing for St. Pete.

    And did you hear they got rid of the only two independent members of the Public Service Commission? Crist appointed them but apparently they were not Power Company Cronies, so they were removed, and people “with more experience in the Power Industry” replaced them.

    Their sin? They didn’t allow a rate increase.

  41. Oh yeah, this too:

    “Klement and Stevens were rejected by the state Senate in the final week of the legislative session. The most common reason given by senators was that Klement, a former editorial page editor for The Bradenton Herald, and Stevens, former finance director for the Escambia County sheriff, were underqualified for the job or were not African American.

  42. I remember a time when the whole house was heated by a wood stove. Yes, some rooms were overly warm, and others were too cold, yet no one had to pay for heat, other than the original investment in the stove. Accidents happened, as did deliberate sabotage for profit – same as today. Then bylaws upon bylaws outlawing wood stoves and god forbid, clothes lines and keeping animals other than cats, dogs and caged small animals in your home.
    I am a liberal, and will remain so forever. I have hung my clothes on a line, in violation of local bylaws for the past thirty years. Last year, they repealed that bylaw – something to do with containing the cost of providing electricity . This year, the local government is debating allowing residents to keep chickens. The really ridiculous thing is that chickens are beneficial to the environment, unless one tries to run a factory farm.

  43. So – from this we gather it is alright to be underqualified, so long as you are Black.

    Hmmmm….sounds familiar?

  44. UW – it’s been 90 and over here for a few weeks now. IF I turn on my AC, it is only at night, and only every couple of days. I simply cannot afford to do it. I NEVER have it on in the day time. I have ceiling fans and a box fan and lots of windows, but darn, it gets hot. But I grew up in Atlanta with no AC either. We did have a furnace tho. And almost NO place in St. Thomas, when I lived there, had air. It’s tough, but it’s better than the poor house. And besides, if you cant pay your bill for one month, Progress Energy turns you off anyway.

  45. Actually UW, it’s kind of a good thing – his ass is going to be kicked out of there before the work is done – not unlike a lot of people that lost their homes to foreclosure. So, in a way – since he really didn’t do much to help people that are upside down in their mortgage and getting the big ole heave-ho, it’ll be nice to know that he’s evicted before the work is done.

  46. “a $376 million, four-year renovation project,”

    For sure they’re not renovating for Hillary, Sarah, or Mitt. They have niointention of giving up the WH-ever. The puppetey masters will rig the elections for him 2012, and for her in 2016..

  47. Mary – by “her” do you mean FLOTUS?

  48. I’m very sleepy gang – worked in the yard for HOURS AND HOURS today – I’m off to bed before Mary confirms my worst nightmare.

    I would rather battle giant grasshoppers….

  49. FF,

    Yes, moilsoc.
    Shortly after the election, that nasty fuck Donna Brazil whined, “I want a woman President.” I had no doubt whom she meant. These peopl plan far in advance.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    “So – from this we gather it is alright to be underqualified, so long as you are Black.”:
    idea:
    How do you spell c-o-u-p?
  50. oops,
    :idea:
  51. Perhaps Donna means herself and not the FLOTUS?
  52. “Kim Jong-il, the ailing leader of North Korea”
    Must be the longest death-bed scene in history.
  53. well Mary his name IS Kim Jong ILL
    self fulfilling prophecy anyone???
  54. “Perhaps Donna means herself and not the FLOTUS?”
    Brazile got what she wanted, a black president. So when she says “woman,” she means “black woman.”
    Now, given that no one but a few hundred thousand popl know who Brazle is, but everyone knows who moilsoc antoinette is, and since moilsoc is being shoved in our faces and rammed down our throats daily, and since we know she doesn’t mean Condi Rice, that doesn’t leave too big a field. Unless you include that adorable Mrs. Conyers from Detroit..
  55. Just appalling. For once, I’m speechless. (Crickets.)
  56. And the MSM lapdogs just keep rolling along….
    check out this “news” from the CNN website about Meeeshoe’s fashion sense. Oil spill-Oil smill….who cares when you’ve got a fashion savvy FLOTUS!!
  57. oh and memo to Obama:
    Please stop cocking your head up so you nose sticks up in the air. It really is unbecoming of a President.
  58. I think we fell down the rabbit hole.
  59. NES,
    And the implications:
    see Mary@10:18 PM and the ensuing discusion through your comment
  60. imust,
    “Kim Jong ILL”
    LOLOL
  61. “It really is unbecoming of a President.”
    Ah, imust, but to a usurper….
  62. Wow just wow! $376 million….
    BTW cute header!
  63. Okay, you guys need a giggle:
  64. yttik,
    Wel, they can put that in their pipe and smoke it.
  65. Well Obie and Mobie asked the Senate about the renovations and this is what the Senate said:
  66. LOL, Fredster.
  67. ROFL Fredster! PERFECT!
  68. I had to leave to go to work after my comment downstairs about the renovations.
    These two really have no common sense. Neither one has ever had a real job and had to pay their own bills.
    They have been carried their whole lives and really believe they are special and owed. They are the most embarrassing and repulsive couple ever in the white house. The country can not stand another 2 1/2 years of these two.
  69. fredster, hilarious! Yep, that’s their ‘tude!
  70. As for WH renovation, if I’m recalling correctly, Nancy Reagan did it too.
  71. econsmed, I really don’t think the Os are going to have to move during renovations. They’ll occupy different wings of the palace while renovs. are underway (which probably makes the whole project much more expensive than it would otherwise be).
  72. Let’s see. The renovaion will take 4 years. His term ends in a litte more than 2 1/2 years. Doesn’t sound ike they’re planning on moving out any time in the foreseeable future, does it?
  73. Hey imust, you can’t tell us what you”re cooking if you ain’t gonna ‘vite us.
  74. Whoa Fredster! That vid rules.
  75. Mary on the implications: right on. At the very least, it’s clear they can’t conceive of his losing in ’12.
  76. NES, Nancy Reagan did remodel the WH too ($1 million dollars), but the money to do it was from private donations. Oh, and you are so correct, I should have invited everyone if I was going to talk about my dinner prep! My mother DID teach me better manners….[hanging head in shame].
    BTW the asparagus and corn turned out delicious!
  77. Next time imust…. I’ll bring a bib.
  78. That photo of the Os at the head of this post is from inauguration day; right? It’s an odd photo because Mr. O looks positively short and shriven next to Mrs. O.
  80. imust, sounds yummy! Glad you had a nice evening.
    Look at the pic at the top of the post. I thought that outfit Mechelda had on for the inaug was hideous. It was covered in sequins. For the morning. And the color…gag. What a fashion icon.
  81. Mr. O looks positively short and shriven next to Mrs. O.
    ————
    Yes, that’s what got me thinking about how skinny Barry looks, but I didn’t realize it was an older photo. Makes sense, he’s wearing a long black coat so it must have been taken in the winter, so January inauguration is probably right.
  82. Did someone eat lobster? I love lobster. buy me lobster and I will do whatever you tell me to do.
  83. Yes Mary, it does appear they don’t plan on going anywhere. And frankly, I agree with them, considering the deranged lineup the Republicans have that never seems to change.
  84. psst…NES….I think we’ve found UW’s achilles heel….lobster…..and all this time I thought it was carmel apple walnut PIE.
  85. See, NES? See what happens when you expose the heel????? :)
  87. twice I have submitted a comment and it does not show.
  88. When I succeed in exposing your “heel,” I’ll retire. Also, will have to, um, dispose of all witnesses.
  89. Wait; I just had a more optimistic thought. What if this renovation is just another Evilrod production, generated to create a bandwagon effect: “obama is such a shoo in for re-election that he’s even renovating the WH to his liking.”
    The only way barry and me-me-me-chelle will be brought down is if blacks wake up to he fact that the couple of the year has merely used them, intends to do nothing for them, and is, in general, fucking them over.
  90. helen i think you sometimes get caught in spam because you so often post links. Eventually the spam cop just decides that next time you post, you’re toast.
  91. Yes NES, the witnesses will have to go.
  92. “They are the most embarrassing and repulsive couple ever in the white house. The country can not stand another 2 1/2 years of these two.”
    helen,
    Wll said, especially the “repulsive” part. Unfortunately, midterm elections don’t cover arrogant, jumped-up trash.
  93. I must say I am crushed that nobody commented on my clever photo caption quote. I thought i was being terribly clever in taking the overused phrase and giving it it’s true language roots.
    Qu’ils mangent de la brioche
    Crushed, I tell you.
  94. I felt so very La Belle Dame Sans Merci!
  95. helen,
  108. 1. The upgrades will qualify the WH to be sold. If anyone can sell the WH, it is the Obama’s, and the taxpayers will have enabled the sale.
    2. I’ll be grateful if the exterior of the WH remains white.
    UW: Sorry about the updated photo caption. I do not remember enough French to know/guess its translation.
  109. Utility companies are scamming in CA too. The “greenies” won’t allow another dam to be built so we’re constantly short of water (so they say). Same as an up thread comment. Bills go up if you conserve or not.
    PG & E put in “smart meters”. This prompted the lay off of REAL human meter readers. Many, many bills have skyrocketed for no obvious reason. The company denied it until they ran out of excuses. Now they’re opening a new customer service dept. staffed with REAL human beings to follow up on complaints. WTF?
  110. Yes helen, posting links is fine and correct, I’m just thinking like some spam software would think. Software isn’t able to ‘reason’ beyond it’s programming. If it sees a person posting links all the time, it might be inclined to think it’s a link spammer. The spammer may also not like that you have more than one IP. From work and home. Just using my digit head here is all. I KNOW it will dump ANYONE who posts more than two links at a time though. that’s a for sure.
    So folks, when your post with those four links in it doesn’t show up, understand why. Spammers do multiple links and as far as the filter is concerned, you’re probably pimping porn.
  111. Yes, getfit, the power companies are playing that scam all over the place. They send you all kinds of information on how to conserve, like they care. And then they get you to conserve like they are told to do by the government. Next, they crank up the rates because of the lower usage that lowers their profit. So it IS a big scam. They couldn’t care less so long as they make their projected profits. Under these behemoths, power will always cost you more and will NEVER cost you less.
  114. OMG helen……H-E-double hockey sticks HAS frozen over!
    Donna Brazile actually said this??
    One of the problems I have with the [Obama] administration is that they’re not tough enough,” Brazile said. “They are waiting for BP to say, ‘oh we have a new plan to stop the oil leak.’ They need to stop it, contain it, clean it up and try and help us conserve our coastal wetlands,” Brazile said.
  115. Actually, I think Cokie Roberts was one of the few actual journalists. She did speak out about the sexism and misogyny but she was one lone voice.
  116. this song seems about right
  117. LOL helen! Perfect song!
  118. Excuse your French DE??
    What’s wrong?
  119. I love when DE talks French to me.
  120. :oops:
  121. It’s funny my moms side of the family all speaks French so when “little ears and big mouths” were around the conversation switched to French. Certain words you just pick up. But I leaned that word from 60 mins some famous French painter would paint the word merde in his paintings.
    But if you must know imust, picture fruit on a tree rotting in the sun and no one cares. That just about covers it.
  122. DE my mother spoke so many damned languages I never knew what the hell she was saying half the time. If it ain’t Italian, I’m at a loss. Although I can very easily understand someone speaking to me in Spanish. Those romance languages are all very similar. But when I hear french I get so turned on, I simply never get past that to the learning part.
  123. Seems to me that White House has been under rennovation since the Reagan admin. It was almost completely covered by white tarps for several years, I think under Bush 43. If it needs more and more rennovations, it’s a money pit that should be razed or turned into a museum, IMHO.
  124. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? I’m glad I installed that puke bucket next to my computer……………….aaarrrgh!!!!!!
  125. Hey Tiger, why don’t you tell us how you REALLY feel? :)
  126. More good news – NOT! I am so sick of the usurper and his wife. Still partying while the Gulf Coast implodes under the oil gusher. Unbelievable.
