Where is the fist?

Who else remembers Take Back the Night Rallies?  They were BIG when I was in college.  Many, many women (and some good men!) filling the streets in huge numbers.  They still exist, but definitely not to the same extent.  I have a lot of good memories of those old days.  It was a wonderful time to be in college!  Second wave feminism was in full swing.  I remember all the consciousness raising classes, the assertiveness training classes, lots of marches.  We even had a building just off campus called the Women’s Resource and Action Center (WRAC).  The name pretty much explains its purpose!  There were lots of feminist publications, both local and national, and I can tell you they didn’t feature hairstyles or shoes!

And I most definitely remember the symbol in this ad.  The woman’s sign with the top fashioned into a moon (for taking back the night), and the FIST in the middle.  We were TAKING back the night, not asking men “pretty please give us our rights but we’re not really serious because our whole goal in life is to sexually attract you!”  Where is that fist NOW?  (No pun intended, but we really COULD ask NOW that question)!  Note:  The photo below is NOT from that previous era:

Ack, don’t even get me started on intersectionality and women having to solve all the “isms” in the world EXCEPT sexism.  But speaking of NOW, check out this website  listing their history year by year.  I encourage everyone to notice the themes of their work over the years – you’ll notice that while most of their historical work focused on WOMEN, the most recent work included an anti-war march and opposing immigration reform measures.  Well, that’s okay – I’m sure the anti-war groups and the anti-immigration-reform groups are having rallies for women’s rights in return!  (Excuse me while I laugh hysterically!)  You may also notice that while the site is copyrighted through 2012, the last year for which they have listed their work is 2006.  You know, had I supported the notion that Obama “is what a feminist looks like”, I think I’d start hiding some recent history, too!

It really makes you feel despair.  We’ve got Obama, who is doing the right’s work for them.  We’ve got the people on the left, who don’t make a peep, because they think they can’t protest a guy who SAYS he’s a democrat, and of course as we all know, any criticism of Obama is racist.  And we’ve got the useless 3rd wave.  And we’ve got some crazies running for the republican nomination.  It really is the perfect storm – for attacks on the good ship Woman.

But there may be hope on the horizon.  Two things happened recently that piqued my interest.

This is San Francisco philanthropist Susie Tompkins Buell.  I’d never heard of her before, but apparently she was a huge Hillary supporter.  She disagrees with Obama’s handling of environmental issues and has decided to withhold donations to him.  She is mega-rich, so don’t think he doesn’t know!  Now, judging from some of the comments to the article, apparently not all environmentalists agree with her view of what is “environmentally friendly”.  But what I like about this woman is how she has now chosen to use her donations.  She is not just withholding donations from Obama and the DNC, but she is instead sending them directly to individual candidates.  I think this is a wonderful answer for people who are fed up with the parties!  Who needs the middle man traitors?

Here’s a photo of the second thing that gave me hope.

Virginia’s lawmakers have had an extremely busy month pissing all over the rights of women in the state. And today, when lawmakers made their way into or out of the capitol, they were greeted by over 1,000 protesters— mostly women— linking arms and standing silently in protest.

Over 1,000 protesters!  And the legislature decided to put off the vote!  Hooray!  These women and men are Taking Back Women’s Bodies!

The perfect storm has opened the floodgates, and all the crazies are jumping on their opportunity to control women and their bodies.  We want Obama out, but we don’t want a crazy right winger in office instead.  But maybe there’s silver lining to the clouds on the horizon!  It’s starting to look like Santorum and Gingrich, as well as these crazy legislators, spouting off their nonsense is finally awakening women.

Maybe women are about to raise their fists again.  Maybe 3rd wavers are learning how to MAKE one.

(This website is under construction, but it is going to have oral herstories from past Take Back the Night participants, starting from the 70s – might be very interesting!)

  1. Brava, Lorac! Love this post.

You know, Take Back The Night, which I remember well, now reminds me of “Take Your Daughters To Work Day”. Remember when that started? It was to show girls what’s out there in the world of work that they otherwise wouldn’t be exposed to in a SEXIST society. I remember taking daughters of men I knew for the day and giving them some fun and knowledge at the same time. Next thing you know, the boyz complained. How come THEY couldn’t come to Take Your Daughters To Work Day? Waaaaaaaaaaaa! We want to see what’s available too! The answer of course, was: EVERYTHING is available to you, you little pricks. You can’t stand to see girls have ONE thing you don’t dominate, just like your Daddies. SO TYDTWD became Take Your Child To Work Day or some such shit and then it comparatively fizzled.

It does seem that women lie down and get appropriated for other causes, and their own causes always get buried. BIG case in point is the YWCA. Always a bastion of strength for women. I was on a YWCA Board and loved it. Now you will see YWCAs making Racism their major cause. I mean it’s on some of their PAMPHLETS, as IF women have time to put the SHIT that is happening to them aside for another cause! No offense, but WTF? Wherever there was a rally against racism, you would ALWAYS find women. When was the last time since he was BORN that you saw Jesse Jackson at a WOMANS RIGHTS RALLY? Unless of course, he was appropriating it. Just saying!

Then we saw women right there cleaning up and serving food for OWS. Then OWS tells them not to report their despicable, disgusting rapists because it might hurt “The Cause”. And yet women kept showing up. Every woman who supported OWS should have told them to stick it up their asses right there and then!

How stupid can women be, really?

The government cannot deny health benefits to the wife of a lesbian court employee by relying on the 1996 law that bars government recognition of same-sex unions, a federal judge has ruled.

In Wednesday’s ruling, U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White said the government’s refusal to furnish health insurance to Karen Golinski’s wife is unjustified because the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutionally discriminates against same-sex married couples.

Golinski, a staff lawyer for the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, has been trying to secure spousal benefits for her wife,

  3. Over 1,000 protesters! And the legislature decided to put off the vote! Hooray! These women and men are Taking Back Women’s Bodies!

The House of Delegates amended the bill (no vaginal ultrasound, just one of the abdomen, which makes no sense) and a few other changes.

Okay, I woke up and am now going back to bed. (I smoked and tinkled)

  4. Gov won’t sign it. Wants more changes. Another thousand people will be protesting soon. lol.

  5. I just tweeted rick:

Has anybody told @RickSantorum yet that vaginas really do have teeth? Get right on that one Rick! Bob Morris wants to help out with a law.

  6. I still haven’t gotten over the shock of seeing alleged feminists supporting Obama over Hillary.

  7. My said, “I still haven’t gotten over the shock of seeing alleged feminists supporting Obama over Hillary.”

My, I haven’t gotten over it either!

  8. Here is a fist, great post, Lorac – “Oh yes, I remember it well. We had some great women speakers come to our campus before everything got tarnished with the “feminine” lable.

I put the following link on before because this woman gives me hope. Yes, she is a Republican, but the way she rips a new one for Chris Brown and her comment on the young women of today is fantastic.

You have to scroll down to get the vid but don’t miss it. I just could not figure out how to make the vid link come up here.

  9. good morning ((((((UPPITY’S))))

wonderful Post Lorac, unfortuantely I don’t remember the group

so glad I have you to help me remeber (NES is going to be sooooooooooo J)

  10. Perhaps we can arrange to make a law that forces all male legislators to stick a vaginal probe up their asses before they can make another law violating women’s personal body parts.

  11. “The House of Delegates amended the bill (no vaginal ultrasound, just one of the abdomen, which makes no sense) and a few other changes.”
    **********
IMO, the protest over “ultrasound” is missing what I think is the intention of the legislation. The vaginal/abdominal ultrasound change makes no sense other than to let the “protesters” high five and say that they won.

I did a quick review of abortion procedures at a few providers in States where I felt there was likely little State interference, ie NY, WA, CA, DC and some “Red” States AL, AR, etc. There are variations. but just about all require a ultrasound for gestational age, and for “the pills/ medical abortion” a follow up ultrasound.

The purpose of any abortion legislation by fundie wackos is to throw more sand in the machinery, will survive a court challenge and over time make abortion essentially unavailable. After reading the Va bill, my conclusion is that the effect on the providers is to add to the paper work/documentation burden, slow down the process and add cost and hassle. Here is a link to the original bill:

  12. Good ol’ Judge White. Another blow for freedom by my ‘local’ federal court. The appeal will be interesting to watch.

To be fair, Obama deserves credit for not defending DOMA. (Ducking and covering….)

  13. Has anybody told @RickSantorum yet that vaginas really do have teeth?

Now Rick will be for dental coverage for women, albeit limited to teeth extraction.

How quick he is to protect his book.

  15. From an Ann Coulter article taking on the wing nuts who think Romney isn’t conservative enough to be the nominee:

Striking a pose as the only true fighter for real Americans may be fun, but this is no way to win elections. This is Sharron Angle on a national level.

The obsession with sticking it to the Establishment (which includes Christine O’Donnell, but excludes Bill Kristol) by voting for a loose cannon demagogue or a crusading Catholic who can’t seem to move the conversation past contraception is as pie-in-the-sky delusional as anything dished by Democrats carrying on about “green jobs.”

If saving the environment is the best way to create new jobs, then it could be true that being a hard-core environmentalist nutcase is the best way to appeal to the mass of independent voters.

Similarly, if reducing contraception use, lobbying for Freddie Mac and promoting huge government programs such as moon colonies and No Child Left Behind are the best ways to create jobs, then it could be true that Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum are our strongest candidates in a general election.

Of course, it might also be true that dousing yourself in fairy dust does not guarantee that you will find the perfect mate and get the perfect job.

We’re being asked to hand Obama another four years in the White House in order to “send a message.” To whom? And what message? That we’re morons? Message received!

Meanwhile, Romney cheerfully campaigns on, the biggest outsider and most conservative candidate we’ve run for president since Reagan, while being denounced by the Establishment as “too Establishment.”

  16. Maureen Dowd got it right for once–Mullah Rick. His 6th century version of Catholicism could be responsible for the resurrection of the Know Nothing Party. Jeez, in 2008 this dolt said that Protestant Churches had gotten so far off the path they could no longer be considered “christian.” He probably considers Fred Phelps a good Christian because he hates everyone. Well, Rick, I think you have gone so far off the path I don’t consider you sane.

  17. AnneE, do you have a non-NYT link to that article?

  19. Wonderful post, lorac.

And, Uppitiy, this one seriously cracked me up. I may have cracked a rib. lol.

“Perhaps we can arrange to make a law that forces all male legislators to stick a vaginal probe up their asses before they can make another law violating women’s personal body parts.”

  21. SHV, the residual results of ANY law that has government monitoring a woman’s OB/GYN ‘behaviors’ is……they have the women’s names and addresses. Now we both know that the anti choice people can be very violent and mean. Indeed, way past mean, they have killed in the past to make their point. So what is the security status of a woman who has an abortion if these theocrats pass that ID information along to their ‘friends’?

  22. freespirit, if I have nearly cracked your rib, I have done my job. Well, not completely. Coffee or some other liquid you were ingesting would also have to come out of your nose.

  23. hey Lorac –

    *Fist bump*

  24. A couple weeks ago Professor Jacobson at Legal Insurrection said “I guess the lefties were right about Coulter after all.”

  25. Yeah coulter’s on teh shit list because she won’t go for Gingrich or Santorum. Truth is, Ann is about to find out the party was only her friend when they approved of what she said or did. She’s about to learn how it rolls for the token women.

She’ll fight the mighty fight for awhile and then they will squash her like a bug. On the other hand, if the R establishment aka the ‘elders’ win, she will carry on for another day. She may very well be doing their bidding, in fact.

  26. His 6th century version of Catholicism could be responsible for the resurrection of the Know Nothing Party. Jeez, in 2008 this dolt said that Protestant Churches had gotten so far off the path they could no longer be considered “christian.”

Poor luther. they nearly killed him for pointing out some errors in doctrine as opposed to the bible, and so…….protestants came to be. You might say he got the galileo treatment. And now here’s Rick wanting to chastise them some more.

  27. I have great respect for the Professor J. I am just boggled as to why he would be enamoured with Newt.

  28. I don’t know which is more sickening. The Republicans who rigidly demand that everyone of the paramilitary ‘troops’ toe the line in every way on every subject. Or the Democrats who let ‘leaders’ get away with everything and anything and either ignore it or make excuses for him because he has a “D” after his name.

    Puke.

  29. Crazy right winger saying good morning. At least we all can agree tham Bamster needs to go!

  30. John, on THAT you will NEVER get an argument.

  31. See, I am not your typical right wing nut! Now pass me a beer and I will go to the wine box and fill your red cup up.:)

  32. myiq. Oh. My. Gawd! What a cockroach!

I already has this week’s cockroach scheduled. This one will have to take next week’s slot. So many cockroaches, so little time.

  33. They found two two year olds tied to a bed in JANUARY and they just raided the home NOW?

  34. No you’re not John. You are highly tolerant of the fact that we hate every politician you like. But i am NOT drinking boxed wine!

  35. The nice thing about box wine is you have something to throw up in after you drink it.

  36. Yeah it’s been another endearing week in the USA.

  39. Don’t bother to vote–Barack said he’s going to win. http://thehill.com/homenews/administration/212265-obama-tells-univision-hell-be-in-white-house-another-five-years

President Barack Obama sent a letter to Karzai apologizing for the burning of the Qurans, after Afghan laborers found charred copies while collecting rubbish at the sprawling Bagram air base.”
    *********
There is a cockroach somewhere in the above pile of steaming shit. If NATO/US puts soldiers on trial for burning trash inorder to appease Afghans, then this country has truly lost it’s collective mind.

  41. Especially since those burned books contained extremist messages from prisoners to one another.

  42. SHV< NES: Bottom Line they were just a DOG DAMNED BOOK

paper and INK————-yes SHV;; we should pull OUT of all these countries, stop the funding and let them kill each other

I see no other way for this to ever end———

  43. I had to add another cockroach. Local. Illegal immigrant, too. This news group lumps everything on one page so here’s the story itself:

A Wayne County man found himself in Central Court today under charges of attempted murder. On February 3 Police were called to Jesus Martinez-Escobar’s apartment after he attempted to strangle his wife with a video game remote control cord and then stabbed himself in the chest with a knife.

[Of course we're paying for everything from the game control cord through his hospitalization and now legal defense.]

  44. Regarding Ann Coulter, whom I have come to appreciate since she said she’d support, even campaign for Hillary if McCain became the nominee because HRC was the more truly conservative, she’s on course to become Independent (as are we PUMA’s) and reserves her Republican Registration for the sole purpose of having a vote in the Primaries. I do believe the 3rd Party already exists and will manifest itself soon. As for Romney, he’s been around long enough and has preserved himself as a gentleman who respects and cherishes his wife and family to prove to me that he’s as tough as it gets. No posturing for the media, no capitalizing on incidents to gain face time spouting his theories…just a business man who has dealt with every Administration tax gimmick for these past 30 years and knows how each impacts economic reality. No drama, no bomb-tossing, no “apologies” for past political actions…just a decent man taking steady aim at the goal and making steady headway. It will be a relief to have a stable, restrained Economy builder taking care of business for a change, instead of taking care of himself and cronies. Ann Coulter, bless her, is burnt out on the endless righteousness of the Right. She’s just sayin': admit who we are and get serious.

  45. UW–How could you get that vaginal probe up a typical male legislator’s rectum, when his head is constantly blocking the way?

  46. Ann Coulter is making sense?

*quickly looks at walls to make sure those Earth-and-sword symbols haven’t popped up on them, then at waist to make sure I’m not wearing a silver-colored sash and a dagger*

  47. Hey Empty–sorry I don’t have a non-NYT link. Read piece in san jose mercury news. Think it might be mercurynews.com– editorial button. Hhate small keyboards.

  48. Brace yourselves. The Vatican has requested to examine a 1500 year old bible that is held in turkey. It is said to be early teachings of Jesus and is written in gold and it is under high security and said to predict the ‘coming of the prophet mohammed’. Ladies, have you purchased your large dog and gun yet? Because this bullshit is surely going to give instructions on how to kill women. What the Pope is pulling right now is just lame practice.

Would you buy a used car from this guy?

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/02/23/vatican-requests-1500-year-old-bible-from-turkey_n_1296672.html?icid=maing-grid10%7Chtmlws-main-bb%7Cdl8%7Csec1_lnk3%26pLid%3D137898

Today’s Zaman reports that the Bible is under high security and that a Turkish daily newspaper, the Star, claims the book could be a copy of the Gospel of Barnabas — a controversial text which Muslims claim is an addition to the original gospels — Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John — that was suppressed.

They buried the gospel of Thomas under a damned boulder because it was said to have given women a fair shake. Of course that wasn’t ‘supression’. I know I can’t wait to see what this thing purportedly says because I love me the opportunity to get my ass killed by a bunch of crazed theocrats. WOuldn’t it be just like the Vatican to embrace this stuff once and for all?

  49. GOOD on the defense of Mittens and Coulter, SWP!

Meaning? I mean, the Vatican can’t, surely, embrace the idea of Islam’s doctrinal ascendance. Please expound.

  52. I understand Newtie has EXPLODED with OUTRAGE over Bam’s apology to Karzai over the burned books. I know you’re all surprised. /s

  53. It’s written in gold- maybe the Pope doesn’t have any written in gold. They want to examine it. Sure. More likely they want to lock it away in the secret archives with everything else they suppress.

  54. Aha, Mom. Bingo — I think you got what Upps was saying…..

  55. In that old bible story there is a link to a man who had his junk bitten off by a crocodile.

  56. Great post lorac.

    And Maryland makes 8!

  57. Great post lorac!

  58. Now there’s a bible story I wouldn’t mind seeing SanitaryPad re-enact.

  59. This is San Francisco philanthropist Susie Tompkins Buell. I’d never heard of her before, but apparently she was a huge Hillary supporter.

lorac’ers, just read the post. It’s great.

You are correct about Susie Buell. (I can’t believe you haven’t heard of her from me.) We’re well-acquainted. I attended some Hillary events at her fabo penthouse and worked the phones for our girl from there; at her request, I hosted an event for Hill; and I attended her Feb. ’08 CA primary victory party for Hill. I stay in contact with her. Buell’s the first-last-and-middle-word in Dem Party politics in SF. Not only does Obama know who she is, he raised money at her place when he was running for the US Senate. He knows exactly why she no longer supports him and hasn’t since ’07– in one word, HILLARY. Susie is one of Hillary’s closest friends: her penthouse is where Hillary often stays when in town. Susie means business — she’s the original PUMA. And, like us, she neither forgives nor forgets.

P.S.: She was the founder and CEO of Esprit clothing for women; entirely self-made multi-millionaire (she sold the company for oodles of moolah).

  60. You are correct about Susie Buell. (I can’t believe you haven’t heard of her from me.) We’re well-acquainted.

Is she a member of the club?

  61. NES – maybe I’ve seen you mention her, but didn’t retain the name.

Do you live that far up north from me?

That’s really cool you know her -yay for a rich PUMA!

(psssttt – can’t she do something about Pelosi? lol)

  62. Yup that’s NES’s buddy. Still, NES hangs out with us.

  63. Well glad they are destroying the tapes. I wasn’t looking forward to seeing that asshole’s dick plastered all over the internet.

  64. NES you did speak of her to me but I don’t recall you mentioning it here on the blog. I didn’t say anything because I figured I would leave that to you as you chose.

  65. Yup that’s NES’s buddy. Still, NES hangs out with us.

I’ve been impressed with Ms NES for quite some time. ;-)

  66. No, not at all, Fredster. But, she’s loves our community.

  67. I remember her speaking of meeting HRC at a private fund-raiser or something like that and I thought she mentioned something about a penthouse.

  68. Yes, lorac, way north of you.
(She was quite pee’owed at Pelosi for not having Hill’s back.)

  69. Still, NES hangs out with us.

This is my (cyber)home. It’s also the coolest and warmest hangout.

  70. NES said: No, not at all, Fredster. But, she’s loves our community.

It’s always good to know we have someone from the monied-set on our side. :-)

  71. Thxx Upps.
I’ll be removing some of the details (to obscure identity) later on. Just wanted people to get a sense of how far and wide and high PUMAs go — she IS the Dem establishment (the part we like).

  72. NES said: (She was quite pee’owed at Pelosi for not having Hill’s back.)

Just my opinion but Pelosi had Hillary’s back. In fact she was holding it and plunging the knife in it.

  73. Lady Lynn DeRothschild is also a Hillraiser. Are you friends with her too NES? (If you don’t mind me asking)

  74. Good memory, Fredster.

  75. Just my opinion but Pelosi had Hillary’s back. In fact she was holding it and plunging the knife in it.

    ROFL, Fredster. Soooo true.

  76. You mean Nancy “I didn’t notice any sexism because I was so busy” Pelosi??

  77. I’ve been impressed with Ms NES for quite some time.

Oh no, no, no, Fredster. I insist you take me all on my own, unenhanced by any glam connections. I’ve eaten crow with the best of them, eg.

  78. You may have eaten a little crow NES….but you do it with style and a splash of fine wine nonetheless ;)

  79. Good memory,Fredster.

Heh. Queens don’t forget things like that.

I’m going to take a stroll outside for a few. It’s been windy as hell here in AL today and the temp hit 80 which is incredible for Feb. Winds have been from the south so it’s warm and muggy, but there’s an inversion cap holding off the storm development. The cap is supposed to break later on and then we’ll get the storms. So I’m going to enjoy this odd weather now because tomorrow the high only gets into the 50s.

    Be back in a few.

  80. Lady Lynn DeRothschild is also a Hillraiser. Are you friends with her too NES?

If only, imust…. Nope, never met Lynn DeR. But, she’s in Susie’s group and I’ve had the privilege (in ’08) of being on some of their email discussions. I think Lynn really broke with the Dems though; Susie’s shit-stirring from the inside.

  81. You may have eaten a little crow NES….but you do it with style and a splash of fine wine nonetheless

    Yes, she does.

  82. remember her speaking of meeting HRC at a private fund-raiser

Fredster, eat your heart out…I also hugged HRC’s waist. (lorac will be so J.)

  83. XO and XX, imust!

Speaking of eating crow, where in heaven’s name is Ms. Utah? She has abandoned me (after feeding me crow and mushroom stew).

  84. lorac’s not the only J one! We’re all J!!!

  85. Or whenever Hill….we just want you to be our president!

It’s a hard idea to let go off for me as well. Lord knows, I’ve tried…but not with complete success.

  86. Oh YES I AM J! NES, how did you make yourself let go? lol

I had the opportunity to see Hillary at a large venue early on in the primaries – but I didn’t go, because I had just had surgery and didn’t think I could handle all the standing in line I was sure to have to do. I always feel such regret whenever I remember that, which is often, since I drive by the place so often!

If I ever do see Hillary, and up close, I just want to say two words – “thank you”

  87. I just want to say two words – “thank you”

Heh. I would’ve guessed the two words would be “love you.”

  88. Hmmm.. well, of the top of my head… while she no doubt appreciates knowing of people’s love for her, it would be more of a benefit I think to the speaker, than to her. But telling her “thank you” I think would be more for HER benefit….?

NES, did you meet those dogs in the picture? They look cute.

And, I think you should send her this article. But, no doubt my name will be well known to her soon, anyway, as my movie The Lorax will be on the big screen lol

  89. Oh, I meant to respond to something Michelina said way earlier in the thread – Michelina, don’t worry about making NES J – she’s always making other people J, so it’s only right that she should have to be J sometimes, too! :)

  90. Hilarious lorac! I’ll send her a copy of your article (sans comments though).
Met one of the dogs. Very cute, indeed.

  91. SanitaryPad on fire “down [t]here” (his words, not mine): http://www.buzzfeed.com/buzzfeedpolitics/what-is-burning-down-there-rick-santorum

  92. Eh, keep your mouth shut, Uppity.
    Okay, Uppity, I will.

  93. I’m just dying to say something. But I won’t.

    lolol.

  94. God only knows who reads this blog.

  95. Ok, spill ze beans, Upps!

  96. Alright, alright, no way am I sending her the piece.

  97. God only knows who reads this blog.

Is the correct answer…Susie? Hillary? Bill C.? Chelsea?

  98. No. It’s NES. lol.

  99. No. It’s NES. lol.

    Eh? Come again.

  100. Gotta walk the dog. Hope nobody tries to mug me. I hate removing red stains from her fur.

  101. You’re our personal VIP NES.

  102. Sent the 2 legged puppy out to walk her.

  103. You gonna let UW change the subject that easily NES? lol

  104. Of course she is. She’s smart.

  105. Any thoughts on this article? What’s their angle?

A secret history of the 2008 campaign

  106. Anyway, NES, I often invite famous people who are true public servants to stay in MY penthouse, too…. lol

  107. You gonna let UW change the subject that easily NES? lol

Any given day of the week!

  108. Say, lorac, do you know who took that famous Hill in the rain photo that graces your gravatar?

  109. Any given day of the week!

    HAHAHAHAHAHA.

  110. Proving once again that wisdom really DOES crown those who seek her.

  111. lorac I’m sure whatever the angle is, there will be hillary bashing in the book.

  112. Chit, I’m sooooo bummed that nary a soul has commented on my Santorum link.

  113. Be back in a few.

Well…had no intention of making it a few **hours**!

I went out for a stroll and the wind/breeze was nice. Sooo, took a ride to get a shake from Sonic. I got back and ate/drank the damned thing and then promptly nodded off watching the tube. I live such a thrilling life.

  114. Phew, Fredster, we were about to send out the (some cute) Marines.

  115. I checked out the link. Was he pointing to his weenie? Did he wet his pants? Was he having painful/burning urination?

  116. Phew, Fredster, we were about to send out the (some cute) Marines.

And I would have been gone longer then! :-)

  117. NES – I’ve been trying to find an answer for your question about my icon. Remember this ad? Maybe WomenCountPac originated it….?

Oregonian Full Page Hillary Ad looks like a Rockstar

by Jason Williams Monday, May 19. 2008

While the front page of the Oregonian headlined Obama’s 75,000 rally at Portland’s Waterfront Park there was surprise on page B3.

The full page ad showing Hillary in the rain. The ad ends with a big bold line “We want Hillary to stay in this race until every vote is cast, every vote is counted, and we know that our voices are heard”.

The ad was paid by the WomenCount PAC.

Here is similiar wording from the same type of ad that ran in USA today.

    Not So Fast”¦

    Hillary’s Voice is OUR Voice,

And She’s Speaking for All of Us

  118. If you highlight the entire humongous link above it will actually take you to the query response from google.

  119. I knew that Glenn Beck got religion when he quit drinking, but I just read that he is Mormon. I never heard that before.

  120. Well-sleuthed, lorac. Susie was one of the founders of WomenCount PAC, and the primary fuel ($$$) for it. She was with Hill at that Portland, Ore. rally that night. The first time I saw that photo was when she emailed it to me and other supporters in that email group, noting that it’d just been taken (by someone in her entourage, I’m guessing). No question but that she was behind its mass-media publication.

So, you see, Susie Buell has been a part of your life for longer than you knew.

  121. lorac, regarding that link.

I find it hard to imagine Ickes could screw up that much on an important matter like the meeting at the DNC:

“Rather than raise hell about the provenance of the document, Harold [Ickes] praises it as providing an excellent record of the history of the early primary legislation,” Berman writes of the decisive DNC meeting.

Harold must have had something else in mind when he took that action.

  122. lorac I’m sure whatever the angle is, there will be hillary bashing in the book.

It’s worse than that. It’s a crowing about how the O campaign tricked the public into believing he was inevitable and manipulated the delegate counts to create that ‘reality.’ Nothing we didn’t know, but infuriating that they’re crowing about it. It’ll likely cause FF to burst a blood vessel….

Berman describes other campaign moments that appeared, from the outside, organic, but which were in fact campaign strategy. He proposed, for instance, a candidate pledge to remain loyal to the early states. The pledge was then formally circulated by Iowa, South Carolina, New Hampshire and Nevada party officials and signed by all the candidates, including a reluctant Clinton; it was not known at the time that Berman, an Obama aide, had drafted it.

Berman also reveals the roles important allies played in the behind-the-scenes battles. When Michigan legislators tried to force Obama and North Carolina Sen. John Edwards — who were boycotting the state — to add their names to the ballot, Berman called an official of the United Auto Workers, who had ties to Edwards, and persuaded the union to oppose the change.

“When the UAW makes a few calls in a political fight in Michigan, the political calculus of the fight changes,” he writes with satisfaction.

  123. Fredster, I agree. He fought so hard for Hillary at that meeting, that I can’t believe he was one of those who was secretly working against her. Either what you said happened, or he was mistaken, or this author is misrepresenting it. Probably the latter!

  124. NES

So, you see, Susie Buell has been a part of your life for longer than you knew

I’m kind of tickled by this! lol

You mentioned upthread that she started a clothing line. Maybe it was that same eye that could tell immediately the kind of power that photo would have.

  125. The pledge was then formally circulated by Iowa, South Carolina, New Hampshire and Nevada party officials and signed by all the candidates, including a reluctant Clinton; it was not known at the time that Berman, an Obama aide, had drafted it

When I read that, it re-stirred my anger about how the voters can’t just be allowed to pick our own candidates.

  126. lorac: I agree wholeheartedly with you.

    and from the caption:

‘The Magic Number’ challenges the narrative of President Obama’s inevitability.

Such bullshit! It was only inevitable with the combined efforts of the Democratic Leadership, the DNC, the talking heads of teevee shows, etc. And of course don’t forget the infamous caucuses. (snort)

  127. You mentioned upthread that she started a clothing line. Maybe it was that same eye that could tell immediately the kind of power that photo would have.

That’s correct — it was that eye. She also designed Hillaryware during the campaign — the color scheme, the tee, the caps, the script, the use of Hill’s first-name signature on items, and the like.

  128. lorac: I know what you mean; I’m sitting here getting steamed all over again.

Oh well…I’m going to take a shower and hit the bed. If I think about this crap I’ll start grinding my teeth and I don’t need to do that.

  129. Wonderful post, lorac! Just finished the thread. Way cool about the Hillary in the rain photo (my fav) and the connection to Susie Buell. I have heard of her and of course I loved Esprit back in the 80s. Also way cool that NES is associated with her.

lorac, at first glance, I thought that fist symbol was religious. It looks like a cross at the bottom and a muslim crescent being held by the fist.

  130. myiq, thanks for the info about Sandra Fluke at the contraception hearing. I still can’t believe that congress is holding meetings about contraception in 2012.

  131. I’d like to remind uppityites of Candice Britton, St. Louis MO. A bona fide pumapac PUMA who is interested in winning the US House seat currently occupied by William Lacy Clay, 6th term Democrat from Missouri 1st District.

She ran in 2010 and garnered approx 18% of vote with campaign chest < $2000.

Frugal, innovative and gutsy, she is trying again. It appears to be a nasty race. Please visit her at http://www.candicebritton.com/ to send her well-wishes … and money, if you can.

  132. Lorac, the picture of Hillary in the rain was taken by Charles Dharapak of AP.

  133. Thanks, Ani!
