Dirty Words on Clean Skin Offers Up a Gratitude Sandwich

One year ago, I became a published author.  Dirty Words on Clean Skin, my journey from fearful news junkie to activist, detailed the revolting media treatment Hillary Clinton and other politically inconvenient women received in 2008 and beyond. Notwithstanding the teeth gnashing involved in reliving those events, bringing this effort to fruition has been the adventure of my life.  Since I was honored to have this wonderful blog as my launching pad, I’d like to share some of that adventure with you.

This is what the process of writing Dirty Words felt like:

cropped anita rafts 1

And I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

First things first.  To be accurate, one year ago, I became a self-published author.  No matter the quality of the writing or value of the subject matter, no literary agent would take it on.  Were they afraid to call mainstream media out on the carpet for their grotesque sexism and one-sided reporting?  Did they really believe there was no market for the way women are still treated in this country?

Every part of me screamed that it was necessary to release the book through traditional channels.  While generating significant interest, in the end, too many changes were demanded.  Agents insisted that anything personal be taken out of the book, but what I had to offer went beyond reportage.  It was necessary that the reader be with us in the trenches since pundits’ foul behavior and their ensuing revisionist history had an effect on millions that cannot be underestimated.  Many books and essays were released pushing the “it was all Hillary’s fault” mantra.  The idea that the truth of these events would be buried without so much as a whimper was unconscionable.  Since Dirty Words proved that domestic abuse played out on a national level, the choice to tell this story in a non-traditional manner meant going my own way.

Literary agents also said it was too late for this book and no one would care — unless Hillary planned to run again.  They were right insofar as this has not been an easy sell.  But guess what?  Hillary Clinton’s popularity is through the roof, she is doing much to remain in the public eye and her energy shows no sign of waning.  To the surprise of naysayers in the literati, she is looking pretty good to run in 2016, although it would be foolish to imagine the fight won’t be just as tough.  So, no, it is never too late to talk about the treatment of 52% of the population.

I remained terrified of pushing the snowball up the hill without the backing or street cred of a publisher.  In the fall of 2011, the finished book was ready.  I handed it to my best friend of 30 years, an apolitical and deadly honest person who I thought would be bored to tears.  Her reaction was quite the opposite.   Seeing that I was dragging my feet on taking the next step, she urged me forward.  Her words will stay with me forever:

“You wrote a book about this brilliant woman who the media told to sit down and shut up.  How long are you going to wait for someone to give you permission to have your voice?”

Six months later, I launched my book on this wonderful site.  I cannot thank each of you enough, especially the lovely Miss Uppity, for cradling this effort and giving me so much support.   But the moments before and after were not without their real life drama.  At the end of January 2012,  my mother collapsed.  With her in and out of hospitals and skilled nursing for the months that followed, I almost abandoned putting the whole project out altogether.   I’m sure many have had the experience of family crises pushing their own goals to the back burner.  I made the decision to be there for her and myself at the same time.

DWOCS Front Book Cover onlyIn March, when I had the proof copy, I raced to the hospital to put the book in Mom’s hands, since it is dedicated to her.  She needed to know that I had finished what I started.  Once it started selling and her health was a bit better, I went back for my daily visit and read her a few paragraphs.  With her charming Italian accent, Mom stuck her elbows out and said “Fly, fly.  Spread your wings and fly.”

She must have been channeling.  I’d never heard her say anything like that.

While I made some early mistakes in marketing, I found great publicists who got me on every imaginable radio outlet.  TV, predictably was harder.  I am now often introduced and regarded as an expert on all things Hillary and all things sexist!  And due to the support of another amazing blogger on this site, my book is on the curriculum at Pasadena City College.  I love going to speak to the students there.  A young man said to me, “Well I’m not a feminist but…”  I stopped him and we had the following exchange:

Me: Do you believe a woman is equal to a man?
Him: Yes.
Me: Do you believe women should get equal pay for equal work?
Him: Yes.
Me: Do believe there should be an end to violence against women?
Him: Yes.
Me: Congratulations.  You’re a feminist.

Dirty Words on Clean Skin has spent 16 weeks as #1 on Women in Politics books on Amazon.

It was a nice ego boost to see my name above Christiane Amanpour’s.  She must have looked at the stats and thought – who the hell is Anita Finlay!   While that may not make the book a best-seller by traditional standards, it has sold far more than the vast majority of  self-published works (with the exception of Fifty Shades of Grey, of course.  Maybe there’s a future for me in chick-porn, but I doubt it…)

The book has also sold more than quite a few traditionally published books but, more important, I’ve been able, via radio, to get this message out to millions of people.  It is something I continue to do, both as an ongoing commentator on America’s Radio News Network and The Jerry Doyle Show (#3 in syndication in the country).  I’ve been invited to write for a number of different sites and am now a regular contributor at a large, independent news site, Epic Times, which has its official launch soon.

Five years ago, I blogged under a pseudonym.  Considering that I had spent so much of my life terrified to let anyone know my opinion, to be so public is a sea change that had to be seen to be believed.  As I wrote, “Watching Hillary stand up taught me to stand up.”

Support and respect has come from some unexpected places.  Good things can happen when you walk into the lion’s den.  2012 was a fierce year.  I grew up and out of my old container.  Perhaps dealing with my mother’s failing health the entire time helped the courage quotient since her situation became the scary part, making me less afraid to sign my name to what I thought was risky work.

Sometimes, I’ll listen back to an mp3 of a radio interview and I am bloody shocked at my own outspokenness.  I like that I have learned to speak out.  I’m still wobbly sometimes.  But I do it.

The best news is that Mom is well enough that she just asked for a large print version of the book so she can finally read it.  She gets to enjoy me being a loudmouth, too.

Her life experience is what inspired me to write Dirty Words on Clean Skin in the first place.  It is only fitting that the new book I am working on be about our journey together — and that’ll be a hoot, I promise you!

Having long made my living as an actor, I still managed to get a few gigs last year, but I feel such a pull into this new world that the idea of getting a radio show and reaching out to others, to get past limiting messages that keep otherwise likeminded people divided, is much more where my sensibilities are today.  I am working on it.

Hillary Clinton’s Benghazi Testimony and the Men Who Fear Her

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton gave 5-1/2 hours of patient and thorough testimony before the Senate and House yesterday regarding the events surrounding the tragic deaths of four Americans in Benghazi.    Not surprisingly, Wesley Pruden of The Washington Times published a smear piece entitled “Hillary’s Last Hurrah.”  He offered a photograph of the one moment she became frustrated with Republican Senator Johnson of Wisconsin, who kept interrupting her.  Bumper stickers are already being made up misrepresenting, truncating and mis-characterizing her answer to him. The mockery and Hillary-hate has begun once again.  She was characterized in other articles as “teary,” “emotional,” “defiant,” “combative” and “fierce.”  Hmmm.

Also, Pruden’s choice of an unflattering, combative photo of Clinton for his story is an example of what Professor Kathleen Jamieson referred to as “visual vilification” – reinforcing an uncomfortable image in the minds of voters to render the subject poisonous.  He wrote that “the old Hillary is back.”  But why would the author do this?  Fearing Hillary’s formidability as a presidential candidate for 2016 is as good an answer as any.

Pruden also accused her of “shouting” and “screaming” throughout the hearing.  Hardly.  Since I watched the entirety of her testimony, let me now testify that the opposite is true.  Senior FOX News Correspondent Brit Hume was honest enough to note that she dominated and was masterful, eating the lunch of anyone who tried to get the best of her.  But it was not supposed to be a contest.  These much anticipated hearings were about something far more grave than politicking or jockeying for position, yet ultimately, turned out to be pointless – except to the extent that the more reasonable players in both parties would implement the recommendations made by both Clinton and the Accountability Review Board to prevent such a tragedy from happening again.

As Mr. Hume pointed out, the five minute per person question and answer structure prevented anyone from getting into any detailed line of questioning or getting to the bottom of much of anything.  That structure can only be blamed on Congress itself and is not of the witness’ choosing.

Throughout this long day, I noticed that many of the Republicans pressing Mrs. Clinton for answers – which they had every right to do – would instead use their time to grandstand and try to make a name for themselves.  In the alternative, some used as much of their allotted five minutes speechifying to make Clinton and the State Department look bad, without giving her time to actually answer their charges before the rules required that they move to a question from the opposing party.

Democrats were in the main deferential to Clinton, using part of their time to thank her, even celebrate her service as Secretary of State.  Their questions were more of an opportunity to illuminate the complexities of her job and the situation under discussion, certainly to help protect her and the administration for which she has been a loyal soldier. Clinton did her best to not point fingers or throw anyone under the bus and contrary to The New York Times’ Maureen Dowd’s earlier accusations, refused to trash Ambassador Susan Rice.  Clinton said only that she was not in charge of developing talking points that were used by Rice or other administration officials when addressing national news shows.

The hearings taught me not only about the impressive depth and breadth of Hillary’s knowledge and in some cases, her unfathomable responsibility, pace and schedule – but I also learned much about the character of those questioning the Secretary.

While Freshman Republican Senator Marco Rubio asked pointed questions of Secretary Clinton, he held himself with the dignity and respect appropriate to his office – and hers.  But it was Freshman Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky won the prize for rudeness, disgracing himself by behaving more as a belligerent punk than a man who had been elected to high office.  He said “if he were president” he would have fired her.  Oh really.  Then it is fortunate he is not president.  After only two years tenure in the Senate, for a man to pretend he knows more or is in any way the professional equal of a woman who has given a lifetime of service to her country was as pathetic as it was offensive.

Clearly, Mr. Paul must have been twitter bombed, because by last night, he had already backed off his initial statements – which not only insulted Secretary Clinton, but made the outrageous claim that Benghazi was “the worst tragedy since 9/11.”  He seemed to have forgotten the intervening Iraq War where over 4,000 of our brave soldiers and many more thousands of civilians had been killed.  He did his backpedaling in front of Wolf Blitzer of CNN.  It is doubtful Mrs. Clinton (or the American people) will hear an apology.  His initial statement, which I suggest you listen to in its entirety, shows a man wholly ignorant of the workings of state and the restrictions under which Clinton and the State Department operate.

Senator John McCain was likewise belligerent with Senator Clinton, given their long standing friendship and mutual respect.  He complained about what he called her “false answers.”  UPI offered a summary of the back and forth in both hearings which you can read here.  Senator McCain continued his railing, stating…

“[T]here were plenty of warnings leading up to the attack on the anniversary of the 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, but “with all these warnings, we didn’t have a single Defense Department” force to come to the aid of the consulate in the event of an attack.”

After the morning session, C-Span aired several phone reactions to the Senate hearings (I heard these as well) and David Edwards of Raw Story reports.  First from Sarah from Sterling, Virginia, a Democrat:

“As a former member of the Foreign Service, I thought that Sen. Rand Paul and Sen. John McCain made complete asses of themselves, if I can use that word,” Sarah volunteered. “They have no idea with regard to the status of forces agreement and to what the role of the U.S. Marine Corps is in embassies.”

Sarah went on to explain that she had been stationed in a Middle East country where American staff had only been provided one security guard by the host country.

“The State Department has no control over that unless there is a status of forces agreement that allows Marine security guards to step out of their comfort zone,” she continued.

“And Rand Paul has no idea, has no clue of what happens at an American embassy. I suggest that he change committees and go over to the Agriculture Committee, that’s where you can dish dirt. And that’s exactly what he did. He was a disgrace and he should not be on that committee.”

Natasha in Lansing, Michigan then called in to say the following:

“As a Republican, I am thoroughly embarrassed by the way they acted,” Natasha said. “And I guess it would be very appropriate to say, there’s no fool like an old fool, unless he happens to be a young fool. This woman who has worked so hard for our country and has donated, well, practically her health had — they had no business in talking that way to her.”

“For them to get up and grandstand, no wonder our Republican Party is going down the tubes when we have two people that act as foolish and ignorantly as these two did,” she added.

These two ladies said it better than I ever could.  I appreciate Mr. Edwards putting their reactions to paper.

But I must say whatever their issues with John McCain, he is in a different class than Rand Paul.  Mr. McCain has likewise served his country valiantly, first as a Navy officer, suffering torture as a POW, and then as a Senator with a near thirty-year tenure. He, along with Senators Lindsay Graham and Kelly Ayotte have been pounding their fists on the table since day one, looking to get answers on the tragedy and conflicting statements coming from Ambassador Susan Rice and the President regarding Benghazi.  I suspect Senator McCain’s frustration emanates from his knowledge that since President Obama has been successfully re-elected, he knows he will never get to grill Obama, Valerie Jarrett, David Axelrod, Leon Panetta, or any other senior official or advisor about what they knew and when they knew it.  So Secretary Clinton got yelled at by “an angry spouse” taking it out on the closest person to him.  That was likely as much satisfaction as he was going to get from the entire episode.

It is likewise fascinating that when Clinton tried to fall on her sword weeks after the tragedy of Benghazi, Senator McCain would have none of it – calling it “a laudable gesture” but noting that the responsibility rested with President Obama and his administration.  Now that the election is over and she is once again “the frontrunner” for 2016, earning accolades far and wide, with many people all but demanding she again contest for the presidency, now he and the rest of the “loyal opposition” want her head on a stick.

Clearly, Republicans (mostly men, as only one Republican woman did any questioning) fear Hillary Clinton’s command and the possibility of running against her  – with the exception of one Republican congressman from Arkansas, who said he wished she had won the primary in 2008…

When you have even former Heads of State Colin Powell and Condoleeza Rice and former Head of Security Tom Ridge, who have some understanding of the type of job Clinton does, come out to defend her, noting her “guts and class” — these others are unlikely to get their way.

Here is a hot flash to those who would grandstand or try to take Hillary Clinton down with these hearings or use the deaths of these four men to blame or ruin her.  As Clinton’s testimony makes clear, we are juggling so many difficult situations around the world and walking a tightrope with many countries in violent transition.  The idea that a woman running an organization of 70,000 cannot even count on Senior Staff and has to make every decision and have her fingers in every single pie all by herself is preposterous.  Is some of the fault with her?  Yes.  And she was the first (and basically only) person to take responsibility.  President Obama did so at a presidential debate only retroactively once he was accused of “hiding behind her pantsuit” – and that was after his other “men,” VP Biden and Senior Advisor David Axelrod, had already gone on TV to throw her and the State Department under the bus.

Yet The National Journal offered an article as to why these events are unlikely to taint her excellent record in the long term.

There were botched security protocols in urgent need of fixing as we continue to face fluid and portable enemies that challenge our old ways of doing business and often evidence the creaky way our government moves.  This may be as much to blame for the tragedy of Benghazi as any one person or persons.  There is a lot more that happened, not only in the firefight, but in the President’s Situation Room that, unfortunately, we will never know about. That is an injustice but not one that should be laid at the Secretary’s door.

At the end of the day, Secretary Clinton has shown herself to have, as Republican Senator Lindsay Graham put it, “A work ethic second to none.”  That fact, no matter what else is on the table here, is something the American people are likewise well aware of, which accounts for her 69% popularity as she steps down from office.

Echoing the sentiments of some on the Congressional panels yesterday, I can only hope she is not done and decides, after a long rest, to once more, step into public service, because if any of those railing at her yesterday were any indication – she is still the best we’ve got.

To my dear Uppity-ites!

This year, my life has been about words — spoken, written, sometimes shouted — sharing a heartfelt message with students, talk show hosts, and, well, anyone who would listen.   Writing Dirty Words on Clean Skin has brought me to unexpected venues, offered great opportunity and taught me more than any master class ever could.  This has been a fierce year that has at times felt, to steal Robin Williams words, “…like riding a psychotic horse toward a burning stable!”

But no words can or should be spoken louder than my expression of gratitude to each of you for helping me put Dirty Words on Clean Skin on the map, for cheering me to leap past my fears to have a voice and leading me to believe that no matter what is in my path, I can handle it.

If you have not yet read the book, this is one of my favorite 5-star reviews from Amazon, simply because this gentleman is not necessarily my target audience:

The Political is Personal by Allen Lewis Rickman

“An unusual book: a coming-of-age story framing excellent reportage about the vicious misogyny directed at Hillary (and Sarah Palin) in 2008.

Finlay’s done her homework extremely well — there is not one unsupported assertion, not one weak allegation, nothing that feels overstated or biased. One leaves the book sadder-but-wiser, so to speak… sadder to see that something we thought was on its last legs, old-

fashioned sexism, is still quite healthy and ready to be called into service when the occasion demands; and wiser because it won’t surprise us now.

Perhaps even more interesting is Finlay’s personal story, which is woven through the book. She tells of her parents’ relationship when she was a child (some very moving stuff there), which led to her (very reasonable) feminism; of her becoming active in Hillary’s campaign; of the scales falling from her eyes as she saw how so many people never ask questions, never investigate their opinions, just follow and conform, blindly, bigotedly; and of her evolution into an engaged citizen and nobody’s fool.

I am not a Hillary supporter, but this book made me very angry on her behalf. I am not a feminist, but this book made me disgusted with the sexism of the chattering classes.

It’s a very well-written book, and I learned from it. You will too.”

When Does Hillary Clinton Get Some Credit?

The New Republic, the same publication whose literary editor once referred to Hillary Clinton as a “hellish housewife,” is at it again.  Only this time instead of sinning by degrading an accomplished woman, The New Republic is sinning by pretending she does not exist.

In Jonathan Rauch’s TNR article this week, he offers high praise for President Obama’s achievements on the world stage.  Mr. Rauch states that he “never drank the Obama Kool-Aid in 2008” but at least on matters of a “post-partisan, pragmatic, generally successful foreign policy, he now “hereby eat[s] half a crow”:

Two major surprises have marked [Obama’s] presidency, one negative, one positive. On the downside, the silver-tongued orator who inspired millions as a candidate turned out to be a mediocre communicator as president. On the upside, the greenhorn candidate who had barely any experience of, or interest in, foreign policy has proved to be an impressively adept presidential diplomat. On almost every front internationally, he has improved the country’s position since 2008.

An adept presidential “diplomat”?  He is no diplomat.  He is the President.  His chief diplomat has a name and her name is Hillary Clinton.  The “adept diplomat,” widely recognized by left and right alike to be a superb Secretary of State, is arguably the one improving our position around the world, if anyone is, putting out fires with a toughness that has her nicknamed “the iron fist in the velvet glove.”  And often, she is smoothing over the President’s gaffes.  Clinton is the one holding “town-terviews” in every foreign country she visits to raise awareness about the U.S., to share our values and improve our image worldwide.  She is the one tirelessly fighting for women’s rights and gay rights.  She is his Secretary of State, which is not the same as being his secretary.  She does more than run his errands.

Out of curiosity, does it strike Mr. Rauch as a coincidence that the area which has prompted him to “hereby eat half a crow” about his previous Obama skepticism is the one area where Hillary’s footprints can be found?  These are the foreign policy successes Mr. Rauch notes:

  • Ending two wars.
  • Stabilizing relations with Russia.
  • Stabilizing relations with China.
  • Isolating Iran.
  • Strengthening America’s brand.
  • Prosecuting the war on terror.

Whether or not you agree with Rauch’s assessment, Hillary Clinton’s name is not mentioned anywhere in his article.  While it is politics as usual that the President gets the credit for the work of the people he appoints, does anyone really believe that Mr. Rauch’s so called “greenhorn,” who racked up barely two years in the Senate before running for the Presidency, figured this all out by himself?  Or that getting Osama bin Laden didn’t have Secretary Clinton’s, Secretary Gates’ and Leon Panetta’s fingerprints all over it?  Wasn’t it Hillary who called out certain elements in Pakistan for knowing the whereabouts of bin Laden a year before the raid?  While she retracted those statements after the fact, and we can speculate as to the reasons for this, it would seem that when it counted, she was stirring the pot.

Typical that some are filled with such bitterness towards her, they cannot bring themselves to utter one kind or even acknowledging word.  This reminds me of the New York-based Hasidic newspaper that, for religious reasons, literally airbrushed Hillary Clinton out of the photo, (and out of history), where the President and senior staff were watching as Seal Team Six executed the raid on Bin Laden.

An article by Edward-Isaac Dovere in Friday’s Politico on the other hand, called Hillary Clinton President Obama’s Foreign Policy Shield:

“For all of my life, this might be the first campaign that we’ve gone into where Democrats are ahead on foreign policy,” former Clinton political consultant James Carville said. “I was told before that it mattered when we were behind. She can take some credit for a political party that for a long time has been behind on a key element, that we’re now ahead.”

2008 McCain strategist Steve Schmidt noted:

“She provides a big shield for the president on any number of [foreign policy] issues….Any time you can lay claim to one of the most popular people in the country and one of the most admired people in the country, then it’s a benefit for you.”

Pundits who have unearthed a sudden willingness to give Secretary Clinton favorable press are arguably doing so because that too helps the President’s chances; a not so subtle hat tip to millions of her supporters who still burn from the injustice of their past coverage.  I doubt they would still be kind if she were to throw her hat back in the ring — should 2016 unfold that way.

At the moment, however, political operatives clearly see Secretary Clinton’s hard work and toughness as bolstering the argument for President Obama to win a second term.  First, this is ironic because Clinton lost votes in the 2008 primary since she was considered more hawkish than Mr. Obama, whereas she found his campaign’s foreign policy notions naïve.  Secondly, calling Secretary Clinton his shield and also, presumably, declaring that she bolsters his re-election chances is tricky since she has been unrelenting in her assertion that she will step down at the end of this year.

What kind of a message does it send that a woman is acknowledged for her achievements only to benefit the man or not at all?

Once Hillary is no longer President Obama’s shield – whether invisible to Mr. Rauch or otherwise – let’s see if he’s “eating half a crow” then.
