    I agree about the danger of executing innocent people. That is why I am so finicky about cases where there is even a hint of reasonable doubt. But in the case of this POS, slam dunk. Say goodbye, shitbag. And I think we should do it faster, like right after the jury brings in a verdict. We’ve had major freaks on appeal for years. Ted Bundy looking for an appeal?     First, let me just say I’m against the death penalty for a lot of reason.

    However, leaving that aside, the *main* problem with them trying to stay this guy’s execution is that he *never* presented himself as a Mexican citizen until well after his conviction. IMO, there is only a violation of the Geneva convention rules IF someone arrested in a foreign country requests to speak to their consulate & that request is denied. That is no where near the case we have here. This guy didn’t present himself a Mexican citizen* (and, btw, the police aren’t allowed to ask him either, at least, isn’t that the problem with the AZ law?) and never asked to speak to his consulate, so he wasn’t denied anything. Thus,IMO, there was no violation of the Geneva convention.

    Re: the death penalty, I’m not for it if there’s the slightest doubt about the murderers guilt, but if there’s no doubt, then I think its for the best for society. I know someone is saying that its more expensive to execute them than to keep them, but I have a hard time buying into that (sorry, I mean no offense). I think it would depend on how long the person lives for one thing. For another, I keep reading that it costs as much to keep one prisoner for year as it does to support an average family of 4. So I think the “costs” thing is subject to variables.

    But more importantly than cost, I personally feel safer if a brutal murderer is executed. Over a thousand prisoners escape every year in this country. If they’re tossed in the clink with “life without possibility of parole”, there’s no reason to bother with good behavior, or restraint of any kind, is there? No reason not to try to escape or not to shiv that annoying guard or nurse in the prison hospital. As far as putting them in solitary and putting their food in a slot, what the hell kind of life is that? I think they’re better off dead, frankly.

    Lastly, I think the victims families should be considered. I think most would feel better if an execution takes place. I would anyway, but I am a vengeful Greek, so there you go.

Angola is close to self-sustaining as far a food goes (there is even cattle). It also has manufacturing facilities, a radio station & magazine (all prisoner run). That might be close to what you mean by the prisoners “earning their way.”

    Obama’s rather atrocious performance yesterday got me thinking. Bill Clinton, when he was in office, was considered by his critics (and some of his admirers) to be among the most self-indulgent presidents in memory. His dalliance with an intern nearly brought down his presidency. He was in all respects — from food to incessant lateness to a phony tear at Ron Brown’s funeral –undisciplined and self-absorbed. But he can’t hold a candle to Obama.

    Clinton at least understood the basic equation in politics: the elected pol demonstrates concern for the citizenry (“I feel your pain”) and in return gets the cheers and support of the voters. Obama feels his own pain. Or as he said yesterday about the Democratic losses, “I feel bad.” Excuse me, but why do we care? He has just — to pick up on his favorite car metaphor — wrecked the family vehicle. I don’t think that deserves our empathy. It didn’t just happen to him; he is the source of the political catastrophe that has descended upon the Democratic Party.

    Obama, at minor and major points in his career, has made it all about himself. The cult of personality dominated his campaign. He turned on Rev. Wright when Wright questioned Obama’s sincerity. He based his foreign policy on the egocentric notion that his mere presence would change historic, substantive disputes between the parties (i.e., Israel wants peace and the Palestinians want no Israel) and transform a radical Islamic regime. He became offended when Daniel Ortega brought up America’s role in the Bay of the Pigs. (Obama declared he had an alibi — he was a child.) He has painted critics as enemies and refused to recognize the legitimate grievances of the electorate and his own party. The loss is a function of the voters’ ignorance and misperceptions; the solution is more Obama in the heartland. You see the pattern.

    No one gets to the Oval Office being a shrinking violet. But there is ego and then there is ego. To be a successful president — frankly to be successful at anything — you need to have some appreciation of your own limitations and of your place in the grand scheme of things. Obama lacks both, and hence, the ability to self-reflect and correct course. His outward demeanor — first annoyed and now sullen — and his disinclination to address the root of his failings (i.e., an agenda at odds with the disposition of the electorate) do not bode well for an Obama comeback.

That’s eight trillion with a “t”. So we’ve got to get our fiscal house in order here in Washington. I’m not sure it’s going to happen under the current leadership in Congress. But we’re going to see what kind of difference we can make.
