Tiger Lily Relay – One Year Anniversary

I can’t believe it’s been a whole year since the Great Tiger Lily Relay. Now that was a fun post and well-worth another read.

I’d planned to make a neat video but real life, equipment, and Lily wouldn’t cooperate. So I have this hastily assembled collection of still photos. If it had an audio track, Lily would be saying, “Fine, I’ll play with your tissue paper and camera strap, but don’t think I’m posing for a picture.”

She is much cuter in real life and often strikes the most amazing poses, but never for a camera.

I have given up on house plants. A little nitrogen is good but there is such a thing as too much of a good thing.

She eats nearly anything, including pickles and arugula. Her favorite green is baby kale. The only things she has flat-out refused are hot peppers and lemons.

The other kitties have warmed up to her. She and Sofia (my 20-pound middle child) are best friends. My eldest now tolerates her and only hisses once in a while. I love my little the cat family.

I really do think she is part feral because she can be a wild banshee.  I also think she’s part opossum because she has caches all over the house. One collection I found consisted of a turkey thigh bone, a fully-intact chocolate covered strawberry, a few milk jug caps, and her feather wand.  (I cannot figure out how she maneuvered the wand back there, but she did. Also, it’s worn down to one feather. She really LOVES that toy more than any other.)

  2. That was still that best blog adventure EVER!! Happy Birthday, beautiful Tiger Lily! 🙂

  3. Also, if anyone can help, I need kitty advice!!

  4. Yes, our baby is quite the teenager!

    Ani, what kind of advice?

  5. Hi Sophie, thank you…Here is the deal. We have an older cat who is 12-1/2 and always very friendly and sweet, a male. His brother died of cancer last year and he was acting very lonely so we decided to foster a little girl cat, she is al adult about 2 or 3, half his size — she only weighs 6-1/2 lbs. He has never associated with a female but it did not occur to us this might be a problem. She was abandoned on the street and a friend had fostered her for several months, but she had another cat and a dog and the playful dog kept going after her, so she needed a new home. It was my bright idea to take her in, since she took to me right away and basically sunk into my knes when she sat on me. We sequestered her in her own room with her own litter and did our best to bring her out of her shell.

Long story a little less long, our older cat has basically made “big kitty”, puffing up his tail and going after her since the beginning. We have done all kinds of typical things to introduce them properly and get them to bond. When we are in the room with them, it is okay with some sniffing and little or no hissing. We have had the younger cat for nine months. In the past month, we finally got sick of having the other bedroom used as her cell and put her litter next to his (he has two from him and his brother) — so there are 3 boxes. She was doing fine using them, but he jumped her one night in the litter box (not the first time he has done something similar) and since then, she has taken to peeing on our bed to show her displeasure.

We were recently out of town and had a pet sitter. We put her and her litter box back in the room so she would feel safe and we would have no more incidents while we were out of town. Now we are back, we oened the room up — but left her litter box where it was. The big cat went in to use her litter box — which he had done in the past and when it was located there, it was no problem, but last night after he did that, she went and peed on our bed again.
Obviously, we cannot go on like this but don’t know what to do since he is being so territorial and she is being prissy. She will not use his litter boxes and there are 3 boxes in the house! Oy! We are very attached to her and obviously love him dearly – but he is being such a brat to her – he gets tons of attention and affection, so we don’t know what to do to resolve this. Clearly, we do not want to keep her as a prisoner in that room, but we cannot have her turn our home into a urinal. She had also peed on the carpeting in a corner on a few occasions when she did not feel safe in her litter.

Is there any hope we can ever get these two to co-exist?
    Many thanks!!

  6. Late to the party, but I’ve been recalling Lily’s Great Relay as the anniversary drew near. Thanks for catching us up Sophie. It was obvious at the time: she was strong and commanding, but I’d not considered she would one day be Queen. It was a wonderful day. A bit of Camelot I think. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGYgj82Wkis

  7. Ah, I remember that well. I stayed up all nite so I could watch it in real time. I don’t think I went to bed til the final handoff. What a crazy group we are! Glad Lily is doing fine and she is such a little cutie!

  8. Ani, my knowledge doesn’t go that far. You need Upps.

OT: I’m continuing to post related content on the DOMA post (previous entry) to keep it all in one place for posterity. Feel free to do the same.

  9. Pamela!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Ani, just jumping in to say that, as you’ve guessed, their litter boxes must be kept far away from another.
As a last resort, I’d contact Jason Galaxy from “My Cat From Hell” or some other cat whisperer to asses the situation.
Peeing outside the box is territorial behavior and means that the cat is feeling threatened.
Don’t give up; we had a cat who was peeing around the house and my sister, who is an angel, agreed to take her.
We have a cat who was pooping around the house (lucky us, both shelter cats) for a year. I thought she might be mentally ill.
We, finally, took her to a cats only vet in Cleveland, who suggested a different cat food. It turned out that “Rosie” was constantly and chronically constipated. On a high fiber, dry food diet only, she’s doing her business in the box and we’re living happily ever after.

  11. Thanks for catching us up Sophie. 🙂

  12. I just want to say how glad I am that some of the regulars are keeping this blog going.

Yes & right back at you. Our meeting was about this time exactly one year ago. I will always have emotions about the beauty of that day.

I’ve been noticing the strong attitude in Lily’s eyes. Glad the long-term feline residents were smart enough to react as they did!

My feline and I had an incrediblly rewarding time together. Alas she neeed to be on her way. Miss her so much. Will look for another in the fall. Right now I’m still using USPS in attempts to save the Republic lol.

    Good wishes all around.

  14. I remember that meeting like it was yesterday–putting Lily in the carrier until she mewed herself to sleep and us chatting away under the shade of a tree while she napped. I am still grateful for your volunteerism that day. Lily is by no means an easy cat, but I love her to death and am so glad she’s mine.

  15. Waving to pamelaofthepoconos!!!

  16. OT: It’s about time!
In Ohio, a bill has been introduced:

Before getting a prescription for Viagra or other erectile dysfunction drugs, men would have to see a sex therapist, receive a cardiac stress test and get a notarized affidavit signed by a sexual partner affirming impotency…

Under Senate Bill 307, men taking the drugs would continue to be tested for heart problems, receive counseling about possible side effects and receive information about “pursuing celibacy as a viable lifestyle choice.”

  17. From your link Sophie:

Heartbeat bill sponsor Rep. Lynn Wachtmann, R-Napoleon, said comparing his bill to Turner’s would be like comparing apples to bananas.

Interesting choice of fruit……..methinks Rep. Wachtmann has bananas on her mind….

  18. LOL imust. Good catch on the Id Skid.

  19. A notarized affidavit affirming impotency? Love it! That made my day. Not only does his honey have to know, but the local notary gets in on the news. I hope that law passes. They better not argue about a man’s right to privacy.

  20. I must wave back to imust!

  25. Thanks, SweetSue and Sophie. We actually have a contact with the Galaxy from Hell guy but it would be months before he could get to us! Today we bought a tarp for the bed!

  26. ROFL on the Ohio bill!

  27. Happy Anniversary, Tiger Lily!!! You’re looking so good! Here’s a little sumpthin’ for you to give your mom.

  28. Upps, my greatest fear is that my life could come to that!

  29. P.S. If anyone complains….UPPITY STARTED IT!!!

  30. ROFL!

  31. I added a new picture up top. Completely unsolicited and she was too tired to un-pose!

  32. LOL! Her own personal hot tub?

  33. Actually, I think it was a “cool” tub. It was pretty warm and humid at that time but the sink was a cool spot.

  34. Ha! That makes sense! Whaddacutie!

  35. Today is Gay Pride Day in NYC (& SF & CHI). I’d put up a post, but I don’t want people to start thinking this is a gay blog.

  36. I’ll be watching the live streaming (pay per view is $7.99) at http://www.ustream.tv/nycpride2013

  37. Mayor Bloomie is there in a pink shirt. He looks really warm in the sun–bet he wishes he could have a LARGE soda.

  38. ROFL! I’d love to be there just to offer him a soda!

  39. I’d love to be there too but too hot, too crowded, not enough port-a-potties, and the traffic is hell getting back out. But other than that…definitely the place to be.

I’m loving watching the live stream w/ air conditioning. I am such a middle-aged old L.

  40. I am such a middle-aged old L.

    Don’t forget Crazy Cat Lady!😉

    [ducking and running!]

  41. I thought the two lifestyles were one in the same…no need to duck and run!

  42. Parade attendance stats: 2M in NY (13,000 marching), 1.5M in SF, 1M in Toronto, 850,000 in Chicago, 500,000 in ATL

Thank you everyone who noticed what a good looking kitteh Lily is!

  47. Of course Lily is good looking!

  48. Thank you everyone who noticed what a good looking kitteh Lily is!

    She’s a cutie.

Regarding the parade in SF: where da throws, da doubloons and da beads? LOL!!

  49. Fredster, funny you should mention that. I was reading the SF Pride Web site earlier–the rules for contingents (marching groups) and it said (among other things):

    Parade Safety

Your contingent must listen to and comply with all directions given by SF Pride Safety Monitors. In particular, all contingents and their participants must:

    (1) not throw items from a Parade contingent into the crowd
    (2) not board or dismount a moving vehicle
    (3) not be under the influence of mind-altering substances while participating in the Parade

  50. Nice about the parades! I bet there was a lot of happy energy there. Did you guys see the latest thing on Michael Jackson? Its in British papers and radar online. Mind blowing stuff about how Pellicano was his hatchet man in covering up abuse allegations. Really evil. It sounds like MJ was as bad or worse than Sandusky. The US media is ignoring it, as usual, and the Cirque du Soiiel people had another tribute to this perv in Vegas. Meanwhile, laker told me that when he was in summer camp when he was little (in the late 90s or early 2000s), a boy there told him he had been molested by MJ. Laker says he told me and I didn’t believe it. I hardly remember it, so much has happened to us since then, but I’ve felt like shit about it all weekend. I should’ve done something, call the cops or something. Although, according to some of the stuff I’ve read that Pellicano guy and his cohorts used vicious tactics against anyone that made claims against MJ, so who knows what might have happened. Anyway, I hope that kid got help, if what he told laker was true. What a weird freaking world we live in. I’ve actually had a shitty weekend, we’re having a heat wave and I have a bad rash all over my face and neck (allergic reaction). Hope you all had a better weekend.

  51. So sorry socal. It has been hot! Can you imagine living in Death Valley with the 126 degree heat today!!?!! Yikes it only got to about 101 here! Hope the week is better for you. 🙂

  52. Sending prayers and good thoughts socalannie, 🙂
